  • Well-maintained and peaceful park close to the centre of Beechworth
  • On the banks of Lake Sambell and 500 metres from the Rail Trail
  • Miniature golf, playground and lots of space for kids to ride bikes
Moveable firepits provided, armfuls of wood at the ready... blaze up a campfire right at your berth at this pretty park in north-east Victoria, within simple strolling distance of the old gold mining town of Beechworth. Make your way back to base for dinner over the flames after long and active hours in the park surrounds: Beechworth Lake Sambell Caravan Park is a piffling 500 metres from the Great Victorian Rail Trail for peaceful bike rides; a few kilometres from the swoops and dives of the Beechworth Mountain Bike Park, and on the banks of Lake Sambell for swimming, trout fishing and waterside walks. Mountain bikes, canoes and kayaks can all be hired at the park. If you don't care to stir from the grounds, there's loads of room to wander or pedal around, a free miniature golf course for family competitions under the sun, and stacks to do for kids including a playground, badminton and volleyball, and swimming and splashing in the adjoining Spring Creek. Also at the park is a well-equipped campers' kitchen for indoor eats, with electric barbecue plates, a cooker, a fridge, a TV and seating for up to 30; outdoors, there are undercover barbecue areas and you can buy gas and groceries from the well-stocked kiosk. And if you are stirring from the park? The Beechworth Lake team thoroughly recommends a thorough investigation of the town's famed bakery during your stay – perhaps for breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, snacks throughout the day...

Local attractions

Beechworth 15 minutes' walk away has a lolly shop and a honey shop to check out alongside its esteemed bakery, just the ticket for picnic supplies before setting off on one of the several hikes and bike rides from town. Café, pubs and award-winning restaurants are in town too for sustenance afterwards; Beechworth is known also for its shopping and specialty shops, open seven days a week and including galleries, antique and gift shops around the busy arts precinct. The park has access to several walking trails such as the pretty path around Lake Sambell and the hike to Lake Kerferd, a wildlife haven with species of all sorts in its surrounding bushland. Both lakes are suitable for fishing too: drop into the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre in town for info on this and on local activities and tours.
