  • Family-friendly site half an hour from the spectacular Elan valley
  • Ramblers’ haven: Glyndŵrs Way, Ceredigion Coast Path within an hour
  • Wild ‘no frills’ camping for distraction-free hols
Ever feel nostalgic for the olden days, when your attention wasn’t so easily divided? At Babylon Wild Campsite, a small family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Pant-y-Dwr and 15 minutes from Rhayader in Powys, it’s like stepping back to a time where all the distractions were gone. Babylon Wild is ‘no frills’ camping at its purest (for camping purists, natch) – just you, the trees, the fields and the peace and quiet of the Welsh countryside. There’s no electricity or mobile phone signal, so settle in for a stay like they had before the internet. You’ll only be able to charge your phone when the ever-so-helpful owners are on site, so either bring a power pack or make your peace with it... This is a top spot to use as a base for poking around west Wales: sign up for some pony trekking in Rhayader, follow nearby cycle paths straight to the stunning Elan valley, pick up the long-distance cultural trail Glyndŵrs Way where it passes through Llanidloes (10 minutes away), or make the longer trip to the coast at Aberystwyth to join the Ceredigion Coast Path for spectacular views over Cardigan Bay. It really is back to basics here, so have a plan for bathroom breaks and drinking water (these should probably not be the same plan). Pack a barbecue for grub time (supermarkets about 10 minutes from the site), or head to one of the many restaurants within half an hour to treat yourself to something fancier.

Local attractions

Want to learn everything you can about the past of this part of Wales? This is mining country, so start with the Silver Mountain Experience (35 minutes’ drive from Babylon Wild Campsite), then travel on to the National Trust’s Dolaucothi Gold Mines, which dates back to Roman times. Need more history? No problem – the Victorian spa town of Llandrindod Wells (home to the National Cycle Collection) is half an hour away, and Powis Castle and Garden, Cwmmau Farmhouse, Corris Steam Railway Museum and the House on Crutches Museum are all within an hour of the site. If you want to see the sea during your hols, opt for a day’s jaunt to the coast at Aberystwyth, just under an hour away. There’s a beach here for swimming, sandcastles and strolls; otherwise you can take the funicular up Constitution Hill to the camera obscura, or spend an afternoon surrounded by butterflies at Magic of Life. A trip on the Vale of Rheidol steam train is a must – clamber aboard for a scenic journey to the stunning Devils Bridge Falls, a fab nature walk through Rheidol Gorge and plenty of photo opps.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The wild untamed nature of the land . The friendly helpful personalities of the owners Nancy and Jonathon. The "car park" setting adjacent to which were suitable places for placing a table, chair and cooking equipment. The view from my tent opening of the valley below. The availability of an inside annexe within the family home which could be used in an emergency or very bad weather. The low cost -£5.00 per night! An accessible tap which provided clean fresh water.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Amazing hidden location, great views and proper wild camping. The owners were really welcoming onto their land, and we found a great spot in beautiful woodland. A short hike up a hill with the kit from where the parking is, but well worth it for the wildness. Buzzard nests, owls and birdsong.

Disliked: Nothing - was all great. Probably better for smaller tents, due to the ground levels for pitching and gradient, but still a great wild location.
