  • Family site over nine acres of wildflower meadow and hedgerows
  • Countryside haven on a farm setting for family play
  • Bushcraft courses, pizza nights, play barn and animal feeding
Base yourself in nature and bask in the surrounds on this meadow site by a stream: Naturesbase, 15 minutes' drive from Lampeter, has just a handful of pitches set in nine acres of flowering meadows surrounded by native trees, on the edge of a Ceredigion village with a stream and wildlife hedgerows alongside. The owners' aim is to provide an uncrowded and relaxed site for adults and kids, where kids have plenty of room to play: options include a rope swing, cycling and walking trails, damming the stream and playing hide and seek in the long grass. There’s ample space too for games of cricket, rounders, football, and for bike riding and tree climbing. Guests of all ages can join the team for animal feeding, relax on sofas in the barn, treat themselves to a cooked breakfast, buy homegrown produce in the shop, try a reflexology session or take part in the family bushcraft and campfire evenings. An earth pizza oven is fired up once a week if you'd like to try your hand at making your own. The site promotes environmentally responsible tourism in all aspects of how it's managed: there's no electric hook-up here, just stargazing, campfires and lazing about…

Route directions

Due to the remote location, there are about 20 houses with the same postcode, about half a mile apart, so if you use satnav to find the site the last half mile can be tricky. Please copy the online map and follow the instructions below. From the east: From Lampeter head west on the Aberaeron Road (A482). After about a mile past Felin Fach take a right signposted with a brown tourist sign towards Ty Mawr Hotel. Follow the road over the bridge and steeply up the other side, until you reach a junction. Go right, leaving the Ty Mawr hotel on the right. After a few hundred metres, take a left just before the blue village signs of Cilcennin. Follow the road for about a mile, through a group of houses and Naturesbase is just after the black metal gates on the right. From Aberystwyth and the north: Join the coast road south of Aberystwyth towards Cardigan. At Llanrustyd take a left to Talsarn. After 7 miles, having passed through the villages of Nebo and Cross hands, take a right to Cilcennin with a brown tourist sign also pointed to Ty Mawr. You will pass Cyclemart on your left; keep going through the village of Cilcennin until you reach the old pub, the Commercial Inn. Immediately after the pub and before the church take a right down a narrow steep lane. After about half a mile at a white house take the first left. Naturesbase is 100 metres on the left.

Local attractions

Beaches, hills and history... west Wales is where it all comes together and you're well placed to reach it all from your base. You can be down on the sands at Aberaeron in 15 minutes, doing everything from sandcastle building and rockpool foraging to fishing, windsurfing and sailing. For further seaside adventures, New Quay is 25 minutes' drive from Naturesbase and Aberystwyth 35. Or get up on the cliffs instead: Aberaeron is an excellent spot to join the Ceredigion Coastal Path, said to be the most varied of the trails taking walkers round the Welsh coast. Keen hikers do the 60-mile full monty; you can do as much or as little as you like, taking in wildlife, wildflowers and wild scenery along the way. Once you've been up, head down... underground at Dolaucothi Gold Mines (35 minutes), where guided tours take you deep down inside the mountain mined for its precious metal since Roman times. Try gold panning yourself at the end; you never know... Inland, Devil's Bridge Falls (45 minutes) and surrounding turf is tremendously well-furnished with hiking paths. Hear the roar of the falls, explore the deep wooded gorge below and learn why the Devil himself built a bridge there.
