A aimé This was our third stay at this wonderful site. Its a perfect location to use as a base for exploring the North Devon coast, and venturing into Cornwall, whilst also being the perfect place to switch off and relax in idyllic peace. Located just off the Higher Clovelly roundabout on the A39 Atlantic Highway, the site is easy to find and access. On arrival there is a board that tells you where to pitch, if you are booked in, or a number you call for if you aren’t. The pitches themselves are all grass and relatively flat. The electric pitches are all in the larger field. The non electric ones are in the smaller field at the far end of the site, and have the added bonus of a large paddock of Free Range Chickens for company. You can purchase their eggs from the stand at the main gate. There is also a “Glamping Bell Tent” available for hire. The toilets and showers are kept spotlessly clean and are a joy to use. The showers are coin operated and cost £1 for 5 minutes use. On the front of the toilet block there is a nice little washing up area with hot and cold running water. We stayed during a heatwave and the cold water comes out VERY cold, which is blissfully quenching. There is a tap for filling water containers on the right hand side of the big field and dustbins between the pitches (that are emptied regularly). The Chemical Disposal point is just inside the main gate. There is a useful little shop on site that operates on the honesty system, and it must be an absolute boon for backpackers as it stocks ready meals that can be made in the shop using a kettle and microwave that are provided. You can also make tea and coffee. The owners, Karen & Nick are so lovely and accommodating. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they hold regular “Pizza Nights” on a Saturday during the high season. The site overall is very pretty and nicely maintained. The village of Clovelly, with its famously car free and steep streets is an easy walk from the site. We recommend walking in along Wrinkleberry Lane (you don't have to pay, that way). Once in the harbor, walk a few hundred yards along the coast to your right and there is a beautiful waterfall cascading down the wooded cliff face. Make sure you wear stout shoes. In the village of Woolfardisworthy, a 3 minute drive away, there is a good village shop, a fish and chip shop and a dairy farm where you can buy the most deliciously fresh milk (and milkshakes too) from a vending machine at the farm gate. We had a wonderful stay can’t wait to return. Its worth noting that Roey’s retreat do not accept twin axle caravans. Possibly due to the tightness of the exit when leaving the site and entering the island. I would guess that larger motorhomes may struggle too. Also, yes, the site is adjacent to the A39, but for a main road it’s really not that busy. It’s mostly farm traffic. If you are a light sleeper, in a tent, you just need to be aware. It doesn’t bother us at all.

A aimé An absolute gem of a site. Just how we like it. Well kept and lots of space, with minimal facilities. We stayed in the Meadow (campsite 2) in our single axle touring caravan. The location of the farm makes it an ideal base for exploring the many attractions in the surrounding area. We were able to visit Wookey Hole, Cheddar, Wells and Glastonbury easily. We even had a day in Weston Super Mare as it was only about 45 minutes away. The city of Wells is less than a 10 minute drive away and has some major supermarkets as well as being a beautiful place. Access to the farm is straightforward enough although the lane from Wookey village itself is narrow, its neither blind nor fast, and also very quiet. We found that coming into the village from Wells Road (B3139) into Preywater Road was the easiest as there are often cars parked along the high street that make it tricky while towing. DO NOT TRY TO COME IN VIA MONKSFORD LANE DIRECTLY OFF THE WELLS ROAD. Its very narrow with a long and deep ford. On arrival there is a blackboard that tells you where to pitch. The meadow is a level field with a couple of water taps, washing up facilities with hot water and 2 little blocks of composting toilets. Its bordered on one side by the river Axe and has a nice view over the Mendips on the other side. You can pitch wherever you like in the meadow. Fire pits are allowed and the atmosphere in the evenings is lovely with pools of firelight dotted around and the smell of woodsmoke hanging in the air. The rubbish bins are at the entrance to the meadow and are categorized for recycling (recyclables, food waste, and landfill) The chemical toilet disposal point is in the main campsite (near to the farm entrance) We had an absolutely lovely, quiet, relaxing break here at Wookey Farm and will most definitely be returning.

N'a pas aimé Just a couple of little niggles to point out, and I would like to stress that the first one of them is no fault of Wookey Farm. As a family, we know how a composting toilet works. We are also passionate recyclers. It seems thats not the case with many of our fellow guests. Misuse of the composting toilets lead to them being quite smelly. Especially as the week we stayed was quite warm. And there was constantly recycling mixed in with the landfill waste. And landfill waste in with the food waste even!! Come on folks. It’s great to see a site so dedicated to environmental sustainability. Please try to help out and do the right thing! Lastly, the main holding tank for the chemical toilet disposal was brim full at the time of our visit, meaning we had to empty our toilet into the “Backup facility”… and that was a wheelie bin. Definitely not ideal but hopefully not a regular occurrence.

Yes definitely not a regular occurrence and unfortunately I think every campsite wanted their chemical disposal point emptied at the same time, as usually its dealt with much quicker. It is frustrating with the bins and we do our best to go through the landfill waste to recycle as much as possible but not when its covered in food. On campsite 1, people have their own bins on their pitch which means people make more effort to sort their recycling. I know of some campsites where they ask everyone to take all their rubbish home but I don't think people would be happy to do that. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay.

A aimé If you like simple peace and quiet, teamed with stunning views, then this is the site for you. Situated on a hilltop, with wide open views of the Somerset countryside, the sound of the local Buzzard flying around below your level, and one of the best sunsets I have ever seen. Access is relatively simple and once in the field there is masses of space where you can choose to pitch. The gently sloping field has plenty of almost flat places. You get to use a tap and there is a spotlessly clean portaloo, and that really is it. It really is idyllic. Some great walks to be had and near enough to the Jurassic Coast, Stonehenge and Glastonbury to be used as a base. Henry, who pops up to check that everyone is okay, daily, is a very pleasant and friendly guy. Get in fast, as it’s only a temporary site, open until the end of August. Please please please open again next year. We will be back in a flash.
