There have been people living in these scenic surroundings for many hundreds of years – and they’ve left behind some lovely buildings to visit. The closest of these is the elegant Castello di Compiano (15 minutes’ drive), where you can tour the house-museum, the food and wine museum and the masonic museum. The hilltop Castle of Bardi (40 minutes) is another great place to visit, with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. There is, of course, also a whole heap of history to explore in Parma (an hour and 15 minutes) – it’s home to a Romanesque cathedral and the Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo della Pilotta museums as well as some great places to eat or buy its signature ham and cheese. Back out in the countryside, you may like to stop by to see the art installations of Liveglia Live open-air museum (45 minutes), find your way through the topiary maze and art-filled gardens of Labirinto della Masone (an hour and five minutes) or follow around 15 kilometres of nature trail in your neighbouring Ghirardi nature reserve.
