It's free, quick and easy!
- Dog-friendly Valentine park, close to stores and restaurants
- A few minutes' drive from the Niobrara River for kayaking and tubing
- Free access to wifi, cable TV, playground and shower house
What a nifty Nebraska location has Wacky West Travel Park: the town of Valentine is the handy hub where several roads meet (Highways 12, 20, 83, 97… take your pick), making it a fine place for a stopover on all sorts of trips.
But while that web of ways in and out is certainly a plus point, it’s far from the only attraction about the place. River-based activities (kayaking, tubing and canoeing) take place on the Niobrara River which flows just a little outside the town, and there are more fresh-air activities to be had in Smith Falls State Park and Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge or with bike rides along the Cowboy Trail.
Family-friendly and dog-friendly Wacky West is in a prime position for all of this, and for everyday amenities: shops, restaurants, fast food outlets and activity outfitters are all within a few minutes’ walk. If you’re in the mood to eat out in the open, pick up supplies and serve up on the picnic tables around the park while the kids let off a bit of steam at the playground.
There’s a small shop at the park for any essentials you may have forgotten, and plenty of other handy facilities including a launderette, shower block and free wifi connection.

Local attractions
The wide Niobrara River is a fab place for watery activities, and you’ll not need to go far to find them: Valentine has several outfitters that can sort days of kayaking, canoeing or tubing (depending on how much effort you want to put in).
If you prefer your waterside days to revolve around fishing, make tracks for Merritt Reservoir (half an hour), where there’s a fine trophy fishery along with swimming, boating and beaches for any family members who don’t share your enthusiasm.
Sticking to dry land, golfers will surely want to play a round at Frederick Peak Golf Club (five minutes’ drive) – ideally at a leisurely pace to take in some of the scenery as you swing your club. Those who like their outdoor space less groomed should head for the trails of Smith Falls State Park (25 minutes) or Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (10 minutes), home to herds of bison, elk and prairie dogs.
Skip the cowboy hat and leather boots if you’re heading out on the Cowboy Trail – the 200-mile trail is actually bike and hike territory, taking you out of town along an abandoned railroad to see some of the area’s finest scenery.
