General

  • Seafront site with direct access to La Franca beach
  • 20 kilometres from the Picos de Europa National Park
  • Spacious well-kept washrooms, miniature golf and beachside tennis

Spectacular Spanish sea and spectacular Spanish mountains… this site is in a splendid setting. On the northern coast with direct access to a sandy beach, Camping Las Hortensias is also a short drive from the mighty peaks of the Picos de Europa National Park, nicknamed the 'peaks of Europe' by sailors returning to these shores from lands of far and wide.

The surrounding provinces of Asturias and Cantabria make up a plentiful chunk of peaceful and rural land on Spain's north, more than half of which is covered by mountains. A good slice more of the region is covered by gorgeous coast, such as the small cove and golden sands Camping Las Hortensias has direct access to, a kilometre from the seaside village of La Franca.

The waters from this seafront site (do see pics…) are safe and calm for swimming, and have good fishing at low tide. Fishing ports, resorts and sunbathing spots are scattered along the coast east and west from here; ancient villages and old churches dot the mountain valleys inland, and there's some tiptop wildlife watching too, such as getting out to try and spy the Cantabrian brown bear in the Picos national park.

Las Hortensias is a green and spacious site, with grass pitches and neatly kept paved roads. You won't need a pool as the site is so close to the beach, but other leisurely options including a tennis court, miniature golf and playground are to hand for days out of the water, and a restaurant and snack bar for fuelling up afterwards.

Also on site are spacious and well-maintained modern washrooms, a covered washing-up area, and disabled facilities.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

A well maintained site with very clean facilities.08/28/2023

The shower block and toilets were modern and very clean. The beach which is within walking distance of the site is lovely (dogs not allowed).

    Disliked:

If you are travelling with a dog, there are no walking routes accessible from the site. Some of the tent pitches do not have space for your vehicle at the side so it is always worthwhile asking for a pitch big enough for your vehicle if you store a lot in your vehicle.

Amazing location next to a beautiful beach. Very clean facilities and a good shop. Good playground in middle of campsite.

    Disliked:

Pitches were quite crowded and felt small as they put tents on pitches behind campervans.

Beautiful location and base to explore08/27/2023

I was a little worried about some of the reviews and now just confused by them - we had a lovely big, pitch, so it seemed did everybody else other than the 2 man tents / walkers and it didn't feel cramped at all. Facilities were cleaned regularly and plenty of hot water. The best part was proximity to a stunning beach, golden sand, caves to explore and a few restaurants/bars right on the seafront. Aside from the beach, a great base to explore many beautiful spots in Northern Spain.

    Disliked:

Charging children over 12 as adults made for a pricier than average stay. Local beach parking right next to the campsite could sometimes mean big queues just to get back in - hot days in peak season though to be fair.

Great site - spotless toilets and showers. Locality was great - close to beautiful beach. We stayed 4 weeks ago so came back as we enjoyed it so much.

    Disliked:

Pitches are small - on our second trip the guy who was supporting with pitches didn't seem to understand that we couldn't access our back doors when parked up across the pitch- we tried to move but this was not possible. Order a bigger pitch than needed if you have a bigger camper as we had no option but to park diagonally so we could get to our equipment - shame as such a good site.

Lovely site with large pitches (sometimes they are quite small in Spain) and the terracing means you don’t feel crammed in. The facilities were clean and there were lots of showers and sinks. The washing up sinks always had hot water. The location by the beach was ideal for older kids as we could send them off knowing they would be fine. There are a couple of restaurants along the front and our favourite place was the small snack bar (dog friendly and cheap).
The little shop is well stocked and reasonably priced.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike about the campsite itself, but dogs aren’t allowed on the beach in July and August so worth bearing in mind (though discretionary first thing and last thing).
Getting down to the site in the middle of the day is tricky because you have to sit in the traffic to get down to the beach.

    Disliked:

It is a dog friendly site but the beach it is on does not allow dogs during July and August. The site clearly shows dogs on the beach and did not reply to my question when I booked our stay to verify that dogs were allowed. This meant we could not go to the beach as a family one person had to stay with our dog. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!

Local attractions

The beach directly accessed from Las Hortensias is La Franca, popular on this part of Spanish coast for its golden sands, safe calm waters, fishing and spectacular scenery. The tiny and secluded beach of El Oso can be reached towards the east of La Franca, through a wall of algae-covered rocks.

Among the ancient caves around these coastal parts, Pindal prehistoric cave, five kilometres away near the town of Pimiango, is one of the several north Spain examples of subterranean artwork, in a stunning setting on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea.

Pindal is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain: see also Altamira as well as the prehistoric rock art centre and museum of Tito Bustillo, about 40 kilometres to the west at Ribadesella.

About 20 or so kilometres inland, the Picos de Europa National Park is another big pull of the region, for its mountains, hiking and some of the deepest caves in the world in Torca del Cerro, Sima de la Cornisa, Torca los Rebecos and Pozo del Madejuno. If you're a wildlife watcher, this is the part of Spain where you might see the Cantabrian brown bear; look out too for wolves, chamois, eagles and vultures.

Medieval Santillana del Mar is 40 kilometres from the site, and Santander 60.
