General

  • Quiet Costa Dorada site by the sea with direct beach access
  • A short drive from PortAventura and the Ebro Delta Natural Park
  • Seasonal swimming pools, playground, sports area and pizzeria

Costa Dorada coastline, Catalonian coves, Spanish theme parks and a splendid Spanish nature reserve… all await at Tarragona's Camping Ametlla near the Catalonian fishing town of L'Ametlla de Mar on the northeastern coast.

This is a quiet site right by the sea, with direct access to two coves and in a spectacularly scenic setting close to the wetlands and wildlife watching of the Ebro Delta Natural Park. The coastline, bays and beaches of the Costa Dorada are within a short stroll or drive – and if that sounds just too tame for the kids, they'll probably like that the PortAventura theme park is a quick car journey away too.

Camping Ametlla has a family-friendly vibe and arranges entertainment and activities for all ages in high season. You can also make a splash at the seasonal pools, get energetic at the sports area, or lounge around the site terrace.

The site also has a playground, a snack bar, a pizzeria and a restaurant.

We found the site very clean and the staff courteous and friendly.

    Disliked:

We found the on site restaurant poor on quality of the food and expensive in comparison to restaurants in the small town.
We were also robbed during the night along with several other campers.
It was only because I woke up and chased the burglars off before they had the chance to steal more than the cash and personal items which they got away with, our bank cards and passports were dropped as they ran away.

We must say that after the robbery not one person from the campsite enquired of our welfare and as all cash and coins were taken we had no coins to but a baguette for breakfast, we were told by the reception to use a debit card for the value of €1, very understanding as I would of repaid the €1 after visiting a bank.

Location of site is great. Next to beaches and near the town and port.

Tent plot was a good size and level and not too pebbly and wasn't too far from toilet and cleaning block, shop and reception and from cafe/restaurant and pools. Good price and children felt happy to play around the tent. Not too much passing traffic.

Relatively quiet at this time of year.

    Will be back next year.

    Disliked:

Bit of noise from nearby motorway and railway line.

Had a 1 night stopover in July. Friendly welcome, had a brilliant pitch right by the swimming pool so the kids could swim whilst we watched from outside the camper.
Lovely clean facilities, had everything we needed.
Washing machines, washing up, toilet disposal, a selection of food in the reception area available to buy and WIFI. You could even order a takeaway from the local town.
Local supermarket only a couple of mins drive away.
Shame we only had 1 night but had to leave to visit family but would of loved to stay longer.
    Definitely would return.

Camping Ametlla is an amazing campsite. The whole site is well maintained and very clean. They have a large well stocked shop that sells everything that may need. They have an on site restaurant and bar with plenty of outside seating. Live Entertainment and an amazing pool complex. You would never need to leave this site, it caters for all your needs. Staff are friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay at this site again.

Local attractions

As it's the coast, fishing and watersports are handily available nearby, along with other active options like hiking, cycling and wandering around the Ebro Delta Natural Park, one of the biggest wetland areas of the western Med.

The five areas and many rides of the PortAventura theme park are also nearby in Salou; plan a couple of days for here to also dive into the Costa Caribe Aquatic Park and down its huge freefall slide. And then another day for Salou itself, the ancient port town of beaches, coves, the Lumine Golf Club and the Auditorium Theatre.

About ten kilometres from Salou is Tarragona, a fab city filled with Roman ruins: it was used as a colony and fortress by the Scipios during Rome's lengthy spat with the Carthaginians.

The Roman ruins of Tarragona are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with piles of Latiny remains to see: frankly you'd need to stay in town for a month or so to see the whole heap, but if you can only manage a day or two, top picks for most folk would be the old city walls, the Tarragona Amphitheatre and, just outside town, Les Ferreres Aqueduct.
