As locations for family beach holidays go, this is a particularly fine one – Catalonia’s Lifestyle Holidays at Camping La Sirena is in a central spot in the seaside town of L’Estartit on the Costa Brava, with all sorts of activities and amenities within a few minutes’ walk. Stepping outside the site, it’ll take you only a few minutes to get to the harbour for boat excursions and scuba diving, or simply to settle in one of the promenade’s bars or restaurants to soak up the sea views over dinner and drinks. Shops, banks and the like are all within easy reach too, as are kid-friendly areas like the skate park, padel tennis court and miniature golf. And then of course there’s the beach… It’s a soft and sandy one here, with space for watersports, swimming and sunbathing. Best of all, you can get out onto it directly from the small family-friendly Camping La Sirena – from where you can also enjoy views out over the water to the Medes Islands if you’d rather stay put. Staying put is a great option, in fact, as the site is well equipped with a swimming pool, a games room, a play area and activities for the kids. A restaurant and bar are on hand for easy eats and drinks, but each unit is also kitted out with kitchen facilities so you can cook your own meals if you prefer (and there’s a supermarket on site too, with other food shops easily accessed in town).

Local attractions

If you’d like to get out into the open but not stray too far, perhaps you’d like to try out some of the watersports available in the resort (paddleboarding, kitesurfing and pedalos among them), take a bike ride along the banks of the river Ter or go walking in the Montgrí natural park. Scuba outings to the marine reserve around the Medes Islands are available at local dive centres too. A little further afield are a pitch and putt golf course in Torroella de Montgrí (10 minutes’ drive), kayak excursions from Colomers (20 minutes) or days spent splashing about at the local waterparks Aquadiver (35 minutes) and Aquabrava (45 minutes). To add a flavour of the area’s history and culture to the mix, stop by at the medieval villages of Pals, Peratallada and Regencós (all 20 minutes) or visit the city walls, Arab baths and cathedral in Girona (45 minutes). The Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres (40 minutes) is a must-visit for all art lovers, or you could make a day trip to the colourful streets and museums of Barcelona (an hour and 45 minutes).
