  • Welcoming and friendly site over five hectares of pine forest
  • Secluded setting an hour from Cuenca and Segóbriga
  • Pool, fishing, tennis, basketball, play area and restaurant
Pretty, peaceful and pleasingly pine-scented… Pantapino, on a five-hectare site surrounded by mature forest, is an ace place for a Castile rural retreat. 10 minutes’ walk away is the village of Olmedilla de Alarcón, a sleepy little place where daily life revolves around its one bar and shop. It’s likely that folks heading up here are hankering for a quiet life, perhaps taking lakeside hikes or bike rides through the surrounding countryside to nearby castles and villages, but it’s also a good spot for visits to the Roman ruins at Segóbriga and the UNESCO-listed city of Cuenca – both are around an hour away by car. The site itself is a pretty decent place to chill out for a little while, too – grab a lounger by the outdoor pool for a day of swims and sunbathing, wield a club on the miniature golf course or get active at the multisports court for games of tennis or basketball. There’s a playground and paddling pool to amuse the tiddlers, and a restaurant serving up homemade dishes and friendly chat in the cosy indoor room or out on the shaded terrace.

Local attractions

Don your hiking boots to head out into the hills for walks to the castle in Alarcón or around the Alarcón Reservoir, where you can see the remains of the submerged village Gascas when the water level drops. Around an hour away by car is the Segóbriga Archaeological Park, an important Celtic and Roman city dating back to the first century BC. It’s worth a visit now to wander among the well-preserved ruins including the amphitheatre, necropolis and baths. Also about an hour’s drive away is the Moorish city of Cuenca, with a historic walled town and medieval castle to visit. It’s perhaps most famed for the ‘hanging houses’ that seem to cling to the cliffs over the Huécar river canyon, but there’s plenty more to explore here, too – visit the abstract art museum, take the kids to see the dinosaur models at the palaeontology museum or wander around the city centre in search of street art.
