Velilla non-electric pitch with shade

  • Peaceful site surrounded by mountain views in the Valderredible Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Mount Hijedo; 15 minutes to Orbaneja del Castillo
  • Outdoor pools, grill restaurant, games area and chillout space
Proper rural peace and quiet, a gorgeous setting surrounded by mountains… and a friendly, relaxed site at which to enjoy it all? Grab yourself a corner of Camping Cantabria, on the banks of the Ebro river in the Valderredible Valley, a little way from the village of Polientes. Here between the plateau and the Cantabrian mountains, the microclimate is a special one – and the campsite’s atmosphere is, too. This is a place where you can get out into the surrounding countryside for hikes, cave visits, birdwatching, watersports or mushroom picking… or skip all that activity and chill out right there on site (the organic Cider de la Coruja is produced on this land, so that might also help…). Everything here has been set up to help you, should you choose that more relaxed option. The main draw is an outdoor pool area (with a main pool and a splash pool for the kids), and guests can also play games of football, volleyball and table tennis while kids scamper about at the play area. If even that’s too much, head over to the chillout area, where you can have a peaceful drink while looking out at the scenery from open or covered tables, or sample some local grilled meats at the on-site restaurant.

What customers say

Tranquil, remote site with spacious, level pitches, reliable electricity & Wi-Fi. Spotless, warm ablutions with ample hot water praised. Restaurant/bar good but limited low-season hours. Friendly, helpful staff. Some found water points few & shower block cool, but beautiful, quiet setting and nearby shops are major draws.

Ebro electric grass pitch (large)

Liked Generous level pitches. Peace and quiet. Very nice restaurant, good food, nice bar and friendly engaging staff. Stable electricity. Warm and very clean washing facilities.

Disliked Just one person managing all aspects of the site/reception during the daytime when we visited (October). Reception not staffed most of the time. Led to a bit of waiting and chasing about but this wasn’t something that spoiled our time there.

Ebro electric grass pitch (large)

Liked Lovely level pitch on grass. Bathrooms clean and tidy with heating which was a bonus for October. Close to the town of Polienties with a few restaurants and bars (just a 15 minute walk. Nice looking restaurant just down the hill which unfortunately was closed. Pool seemed nice but was closed on site restaurant was recommended but was closed as was the bar. Wifi at site which had a strong signal.

Disliked It was such a shame that everything on site was closed but understandable at low season.

Velilla non-electric grass pitch

Liked Peace and quiet (October). Amenity block - spotlessly clean.
I went during the week so the bar/restaurant wasn’t open which was my own fault for not noticing.
The pool was closed, which I knew about but it did look beautiful. And clean.
I didn’t try the WiFi

Disliked Nothing.

Ebro electric grass pitch (large)

Liked Nice big pitch, close to water and mains hook up. Toilet block clean with plenty of hot water. All facilities close to hand. Site managers friendly and helpfull. Just a shame bar was only open one night we were there but it was late season! Beautiful area with lots of walking available. Village had a small supermarket and several eating establishments. Highly recommend.

Disliked Nothing to dislike all good

Local attractions

There are plenty of options to get active in the local area, particularly if you fancy hiking along trails taking in rock-cut hermitages, natural wells and stunning mountain views. Mount Hijedo visitor centre (10 minutes’ drive) is the jumping-off point for mountain trails, with Tobazo Waterfall (10 minutes) a good option for more leisurely strolls. Cycling, rafting and kayaking are all popular around this area as well, or you could follow the Villaescusa de Ebro via ferrata climbing route (10 minutes) or take a dip in the natural waters of Pozo Azul (half an hour). After night falls, head to Observatorio Astronómico de Cantabria (10 minutes) to look up into the dark skies through a powerful telescope. A trip to nearby Orbaneja del Castillo (15 minutes) is highly recommended – the village is known as one of Spain’s prettiest, with a medieval centre and a series of waterfalls a short walk away. For another intriguing sight, head to the once-inhabited caves of Ojo Guareña Natural Monument (55 minutes), among the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world.
