  • Close to the beaches of Antuerta and Cuberris: shuttle available
  • On-site snack bar specialising in seafood paella
  • Seasonal pool, play area and market selling fresh bread and pastries
A seafood paella speciality – in Spain – by the coast in Cantabria – how splendid. Aim to spend mucho time in the snack bar of Camping Cabo De Ajo on your Spanish seaside holiday, for this is where cuisine-curious guests can sample said seafood paella as well as other treats like fried calamari and homemade pizza to have on the spacious terrace or indoors. Off site, it's about a kilometre and a half from Camping Cabo De Ajo to the spectacular beaches of Antuerta and Cuberris – and a free shuttle service runs from site to sands every day in July and August if you a) can't be faffed stirring that far on foot, or b) are laden with bucket and spade, games, towel, picnic basket and other beach-based paraphernalia. For day trips and city sightseeing, local town Ajo is 40 minutes' drive from Cantabrian capital Santander, and around an hour and 20 minutes in the other direction to Bilbao. Leisure facilities on site include an outdoor pool and a paddling pool, a playground and a games room. For the essentials, there are toilet blocks with free hot showers, a launderette and chemical disposal. The supermarket sells fresh bread and pastries, groceries, fruit and veg, and newspapers.

What customers say

Great views, near Ajo, lighthouse & beaches. Staff praised. Peaceful, but facilities basic (showers/toilets in camping field), cleanliness & supplies issues noted. Pitches varied, some need levelling. Seems more for park homes; touring pitches in separate field. Some power issues.

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked La tranquilidad

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely view of the hills and mountains in the distance. Nice pool.

Disliked Disliked most things. The ground was very uneven and grass not mowed, even with levels we were on a slope. Only cold water in the kitchen. The showers couldn't be regulated so one minute they were cold and the next too hot. The shuttle bus was broken so no way to get to the beach. No public transport to get to the local town so you were stranded unless you brought bikes. No local shop so be sure to stock up before you arrive.

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Town was a good hour walk but lovely.

Disliked The site was more like an afterthought given that it had over a hundred static old bungalows on. The pitches were right at the other end of the site on an overspill field, only two toilet's and two showers with a plastic curtain, no where to change, looked like a portacabin! It seemed like a lot of old vans were permanently base there. No toilet paper on hand wash provided. Not a nice site at all give this one a miss.

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked The owners and staff were all very helpful and informative on check-in. We had a problem with the electric hookup tripping out. This was a site mains issue which when reported they resolved speedily. True to say the camping area is a field at the bottom end of the site, some level pitches but most require levelling blocks to varying degrees. There were pitches all marked by posts/shrubs approx 70mtr2. Some used by seasonal/Spanish people living there. Preferred to use the toilets and facilities up at the top end of site behind reception/bar area. Water and waste beside toilet cabin on field. Grass wasn't long according to other reviews. Great views of countryside from pitches. Generally quiet at night after midnight, some people camping were chatting into the early hours but didn't cause issues. We toured the area, site seeing and beaches. Probably better to use as a stopover or maybe 2-3 days as without transport can be a little remote. Lovely beach at Playa de Cuberris and a short distance to Ajo, a small but vibrant local community with all you need for supermarkets/bars and eating out. Several attractions in local area including Cabot de Faro lighthouse and viewpoint. We had drinks in bar but didn't use site shop as didn't appear open. Small swimming pool and children's play area on site.

Disliked Not having hot water for washing dishes by toilet blocks or hand washing clothes and some campers appear to not bother keeping their dogs on leads allowing them to roam on other people's pitches. Only two showers with curtains/toilets in each male/female block, inadequate for number of campers using. Could use a chemical emptying facility at the toilet block on camping field. No hand soap/toilet was always available, appeared to run out frequently. Preferred to use top end site toilet facilities/showers which appeared less used but more of them and much nicer.

Local attractions

Surfing, windsurfing, and fishing are among the watery activities available at the beaches of Antuerta and Cuberris, a short stroll or quick shuttle bus ride from the park. Snorkelling, canoeing and more surfing can all be arranged along the coast at Noja, about 15 kilometres to the east. The site team reckons guests in this part of Cantrabria should have a day or several in Cabárceno Nature Park, 30 kilometres from Ajo, to sightsee around its safari park setting for critters including ostriches, elephants, bears and rattlesnakes. Closer to home, the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Nature Park is a popular spot for birdwatching and more nature spotting, among its migrating birds and marine animals. Within an hour's drive are the world-famed Altamira Caves in Santillana del Mar, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Subterranean sorts can also mosey along to El Soplao, to see its stalactites, stalagmites, minerals and fossils, or to take the mining train for a complete tour. And yet another must-see in the region are the rock formations of the Ojerada, near the lighthouse of Cabo de Ajo: follow the signs to the lighthouse then turn right. The Magdalena Palace and beaches of Santander are within 40 kilometres of the site.
