- Secure and family-friendly site in Lokaleng, North West Province
- Mafikeng Game Reserve and the Botswana border 40 minutes’ drive
- Setswana dishes served in the restaurant; pool and quad bike hire
Fancy spending some R&R on a South African farm? What’s stopping you heading straight to Shumba Camping Site? It’s half an hour’s drive from Mahikeng (Mafikeng) in the Tswana farming village of Lokaleng in North West Province, and on arrival at this safe and secure site, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome and plenty to do.
You can take quad-bike safaris and guided bike rides, before returning to base camp for a cooling dip in the plunge pool. Ornithologists can keep an eye open for egrets and comical-looking hornbills, and there are regular sessions of West African Djembe drumming to get you on your feet and dancing. If kids are still restless after all that, there’s a trampoline for jumping around on.
There’s a coffee shop and informal restaurant – where traditional Setswana dishes like slow-roasted seswaa meat stews and bogobe maize porridge are served. In addition, there’s quite a hefty list of handy amenities: a braai for grilling up meaty feasts, a firepit for cooler nights and a communal covered eating area. There are also modern and tiled alfresco showers with a reliable supply of hot water.

Local attractions
First stop on your sightseeing itinerary may be Mafikeng Game Reserve (40 minutes’ drive), a sprawling area of open Kalahari grassland and bushveld bisected by the Molopo River. If you’re lucky, you will see most of the Big Five animals, and perhaps even a seriously endangered white rhino – the reserve was the first to initiate electronic tagging to protect them from poachers.
You can pay your respects to those who died at Mafikeng Concentration Camp (half an hour) in the Anglo-Boer War. Staying over at Shumba Camping Site is also handy if you’re travelling to or from Botswana, as the border post at Ramatlabama is only 40 minutes’ drive away.
If the kids need more entertainment, let them loose in the splash fountains at Aqua Cascading Park (20 minutes’ drive), or have a hike around the lake at Lotlamoreng Dam Cultural Reserve (25 minutes).
