- Eco-friendly rural site in Elundini, high in the Amatola mountains
- Half an hour's drive from Hogsback
- Community activities including bread baking and Xhosa language lessons
Community-minded, cosy and eco-friendly… it’s all good vibes at Elundini Backpackers in the rural Eastern Cape village of Elundini, half an hour’s drive from Hogsback.
All the buildings at this site high in the Amatola mountains have been built using traditional techniques, and the site has been kitted out with all sorts of eco features including compost toilets, solar electricity panels and a hot water ‘donkey’. Have a beer in the bar and it’s likely to be extra tasty when you note the site only uses drinks whose bottles can be recycled... and if you opt to get to the site via an environmentally-friendly journey by public transport, friendly owners Elliot and Lieve will sort out a lift for the final leg from Alice or Hogsback.
A real community spirit is important to the folk at Elundini too – they’re keen for guests to get to know local Xhosa culture, so you can sign up for cooking classes, village tours and language lessons to pick up a little of the local lingo. Hikes and mountain bike trails (running to a couple of hours or a couple of days, depending on your stamina) can be organised with local guides, or you can set off under your own steam if you prefer.
Self-catering facilities are available on site, but if you’d rather someone else did the work (and helped you sample tasty local meals) staff are happy to cook breakfasts, lunches and dinners given a bit of advance warning. Toilets and showers are on site, and there are charging points for electrical devices in the main building.

Local attractions
Getting stuck into stacks of activities on site is a fine way to get an insight into the local culture, of course. And to get to know your natural surrounds? There are lots of easy hiking trails around the Hogsback area, each needing around an hour of walking and taking in waterfalls or leading through the town’s arboretum.
Other options for getting up close to the local scenery include abseiling, archery, horse riding and mountain bike tours from Hogsback. And if you want to meet some of your non-human neighbours, perhaps plan a day out in Double Drift Game Reserve (an hour’s drive) – elephants, zebra, rhinos and buffalo roam around the bushveld here.
Time to admire some man-made treasures? Hang around in Hogsback to find your way through the Labyrinth at The Edge (leave plenty of time… it’s one of the world’s biggest) or to visit the atmospheric art at the eco-shrine. Human and animal artefacts (hello, Huberta the hippo) come together in the displays at Amathole Museum, an hour away in King William’s Town.
