This is a site you should pretty much insist on. Slovenia's Adria Ankaran Camping has so much going for it – it’s in an excellent position for day trips to Ljubljana (an hour’s drive away) or pretty Piran. On top of that it’s next to a beach and surrounded by pine and cedar trees for relaxing times, and is three kilometres from the Italian border when you fancy a slice of Italian life too (Venice is around two and a half hours away). And there's oh so much more. The site's setting in the small seaside town of Ankaran on the Gulf of Trieste is also five kilometres from the scenic resort of Koper, and has the Parenzana cycle route a few minutes away. If you’d rather take a stroll, there’s a lovely two-kilometre walking path/boardwalk through the salt meadows to Sveta Katarina just outside the site. Sticking around on site? There are often gorgeous sunsets to be seen from this west-facing spot, so time your day accordingly. Watersports including paddleboarding and pedalo boating are available at the beach, which also has a water park. On site, you can splash around at the indoor and outdoor pools, as well as have serene Slovenian days at the wellness centre with Jacuzzi while the kids are occupied at the summer kids' club (mornings) or discos (evenings). And there's yet more… Such as playgrounds, tennis courts, a volleyball court, miniature golf, bouncy castles and a busy programme of entertainment for both adults and kids. Food? Well sorted too, of course – there’s a mini market, a bar and a beachside restaurant serving tasty Istrian dishes for lunch and dinner (or to take away).

Fantastic beachfront spot near Ankaran/Koper. Clean facilities, great staff, good shop/bakery. Families love the activities and pool. Downsides: small pitches, busy site, port noise, dated showers, extra charges for loungers.

Liked Sehr sauberer Platz, vor allem die Sanitäranlagen. Toller Strand. Platz für Kinder, Spielplatz und auch stillere Ecken für Entspannung. Kleines Café, in dem es leckeren Cappuccino und andere Getränke gab. Großes Restaurant, haben wir aber nicht probiert. Den ganzen Tag sind fleißige Mitarbeiter dabei, Ordnung und Sauberkeit zu schaffen. Viele Freizeitangebote, aber recht teuer, Minigolf, Wasserhüpfburg. Hafen ist in der Nähe, stört aber nicht.

Disliked Unser 1. Platz war nicht so schön. Nach Rücksprache mit der Rezeption gab es einen anderen, sehr schönen Platz neben der Minigolfanlage. Ehrlich wäre es, reale Fotos der Stellplätze zu zeigen. Es gibt keine mit sattem grünen Rasen ohne Nachbarn.

Unica pecca.... Il bar alla sera chiude troppo presto.... Dovrebbe restare aperto almeno fino alle ore 23.

Liked Right on the coast, lovely pool, good ice cream at the bar, lots of trees for shade. We enjoyed sunset paddleboarding.

Disliked Closest Electric Point didn’t work so we had to pay to rent an extension cable to reach the next one (we carry a 25m one), view wasn’t quite what we expected with the shipping containers in the bay

Zum Duschen mit dem Bändel alle 15 sekunden an den Button hin halten, idiotisch.

Sie preisen die Bootsfahrt nach Piran an. Promoten dies überall, wissen aber nicht das man es reservieren muss. Trotz Nachfrage wussten die Mitarbeitenden es nicht umd antworteten einfach mit ja es geht auch ohne reservation - Schade - Mitarbeiter schulen!

4 Nächt 350 Euro - zu teuer!!!

Liked We just came for 1 night, and in spite of the rain, we had a pleasant stay. The pitch was spacious, the bathrooms clean. The center of Ankaran is a 2 min walk, where we had a great pizza, but could have sat in other cool places too, and Koper is a few min by car.. Took a walk in the camping, and saw the beautiful bay with the big swimming pool on the beach. There is a shop with all necessary items too and loads of beautiful new mobile homes near the beach. There are lots of fun opportunities, programs organised for kids and families, or even adults in the evening (piano night- when we came). The reception was helpul, kind, everything is well-organised. I definitely recommend this place as a stop over too travelling to Italy (as we did).

Disliked The camping has about 500 pitches, we personally prefer smaller, more intimate places, but this does not decrease the value of the place in its own category.

Local attractions

This excellently placed site is close to cycling routes and nature reserves, Italian towns and Slovenian villages, coastal hikes and long beach days. Horse riding, watersports and forest hikes can be arranged close to the site. Bring a bike along to pedal the kilometre to the Parenzana cycle route, for as long a ride as you can muster along its 80-kilometre length of old railway that once connected Trieste to Buje and Poreč. You could also mosey across the border to Italy's Muggia six kilometres away, the only port town on the Istrian peninsula. There's a strong Venetian influence here around its handsome harbour and old villas, ruined city walls and 14th-century castle: drink it all in from a seafood restaurant on the waterfront or with a jug of wine in the square behind the port. From Muggia, take a ferry to the port city of Trieste, 15 kilometres from Ankaran, to see such famed sights as its scenic seafront, main square the Piazza Unità d'Italia, Miramare Castle and gardens, and the Victory Lighthouse. Trieste has been claimed as the most underrated tourist destination in the world, so get there quick before it's swallowed by the throngs.
