Firmly in the Algarve region, but with a spirit that's quite far removed from the liveliness of the coastal resorts, Tugatok is a wild-camping sort of place with a friendly, laidback vibe. Liking the sound of a simple, relaxed break among olive groves? Then it’s time to get packing. At 10 minutes’ drive from the gorgeous historic fishing town of Olhão with its shops, restaurants and lively yachting and fishing harbours, a stay at Tugatok sets you among typical red-sandstone Algarve hills covered with holly oaks and rock roses, but still close enough to the sea for days of fun on the sand. Fuseta and Cavacos beaches and the Ria Formosa Natural Park are all within 15 minutes by car. If you’d rather just chill out onsite, you'll be able to cook up meals at the well-equipped outdoor kitchen, dine at the covered dining area or find a spot at the cosy sofa corner where you can hang out in comfort with fellow travellers or work among digital nomads. The part-shaded pitches have access to simple facilities including toilets, showers and a washing-up sink.

Local attractions

Where to explore first? Perhaps the Ria Formosa Natural Park (10 minutes’ drive), with its wetland landscapes, lagoons filled with white storks and egrets, and long stretches of sandy beach? You can catch the ferry from Olhão marina (also 10 minutes) to the barrier island of Armona to swim in pristine water off Praia da Armona (15 minutes’ walk from the ferry) and enjoy leisurely lunches in the scattering of beach bars and seafood cafés. It’s also well worth spending the day in whitewashed Olhão (10 minutes’ drive) itself, with its ancient centre liberally decorated with traditional blue-and-white azulejo tiles, and ornate wrought-iron balconies sprouting bright bursts of bougainvillaea. Plunder the red-brick covered market for picnic goodies to eat on the beach, or head for the tapas bars along the lively waterfront for seafood sharing snacks. For more local produce, head for the olive groves at Monterosa (15 minutes) to sample artisan olive oils, or take a water taxi to Culatra (half an hour by boat) and learn about oyster harvesting.
