Peaceful and colourful times await. That's if you're clever enough to book an Alentejo holiday at the small and rural site of Camping Rosário, for a riverbank stays among greenery, gardens and an olive grove.
As it's deep in Portuguese countryside, Camping Rosário's rural setting makes it a tiptop starting point for hiking and cycle trails as well as other sporty picks like canoeing and horse riding. This is top stargazing land too: the mighty Lake Alqueva close by (Rosário has direct access to its shore) was the first site in the world to be certified as a Starlight Tourism Destination area.
Camping Rosário is a brightly scenic site, with gardens and flowers, views across hills, and plentiful orange trees all around (look out for one reposing over the scenic and sunny terrace). There are outdoor and indoor facilities to keep you occupied at all hours of the day: start off at the pool, have a lengthy sun lounger session after your swim, and cook up your eats all the afternoon and evening at the communal barbecue area.
The comfy lounge with TV, books and games can round off your evening, before a serene night's snooze and doing the whole lot again the next day. You may want to make your way outdoors again though before you turn in: the night sky here is spectacular in clear weather, so just lie back and look up for views of the Milky Way and twinkling constellations.

Local attractions
It's a cinch to get out and about around here, such as on the network of safe, well-marked hiking and mountain bike trails for all abilities that surround the site, or on the four local trails for road cycling. Staff can provide leaflets or GPS files of the trails to use on a phone or tablet.
Camping Rosário is 55 minutes' drive from Lake Alqueva (the largest reservoir in Europe) and has direct access to its shoreline for fishing: many quiet and scenic fishing spots can be easily accessed from the site. Or take a canoe or kayak trip on the lake instead, either under your own (gentle) steam or by day or night tour.
History buffs are well placed for UNESCO World Heritage Sites from here, with Elvas 45 minutes away and Évora an hour.
