What might you sink your teeth into at Monte das Louzeiras, near the Spanish border between Seville and Serpa? Wine, harvested by the site from the vineyard next to the olive grove with 300-year-old trees… petiscos (local snacks)… sunset drinks… a barbecue? When it comes to scenery, the set-up is just as tasty, with a 40-hectare olive grove in the Serra Adiça and animals like sheep, horses, dogs, cats, geese, chickens, peacocks and an ostrich on the farm. The hosts Ana Luisa, Marc and VIP resident Dunga the ostrich live on the farm. They produce wine in amphorae and oak barrels, but their store stocks more besides wine: olive oil, piri piri, honeys, vinegars, flavoured salts and oils, and cosmetic products made from olive oil. It’s a family business with Swiss and Portuguese roots – and they’re very welcoming. There’s a good slice of nature at Monte das Louzeiras. In the garden, the hosts can provide breakfast, petiscos or even a barbecue. There’s a spacious patio surrounded by orange-toned trees, where they’ll be happy to serve you their wines and other drinks at sunset. And you'll be able to use the outdoor pool for a cooling dip too. When it comes to sampling local produce, you’ve got two main choices: olive oil and wine-tasting in the site’s adega or heading out on the Alentejo Wine Route. For snacks, the options are those served on site or a café in the little village of Vale de Vargo, 35 minutes’ walk away. Collect any groceries you need from the supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away, and then make your way to Serpa, 20 minutes’ drive away. This small town has cultural events and museums, plus it’s considered to be the capital of Cante Alentejano, a UNESCO-listed traditional Portuguese music genre.

Chilled, rustic spot among olive trees with great hospitality. Guests love the relaxed vibe, animals, and local produce. Facilities are limited (toilets/showers) but being upgraded. Minor mud and early animal noise, but mostly brilliant, with most keen to come back.

Liked On a passé 2 jours magnifiques dans cette oasis en plein milieu des oliviers. Des paons,chats et poules se baladent en liberté dans cette oasis. Repas organisé le soir qui rassemblent tout les campeurs à la même table. Ce concept est magnifique (dommage que nous ne savions pas bien parler Anglais),mais ils ont essayé de nous mettre le plus à l’aise en prenons du temps avec nous et que nous ne sentions pas à l’écart. Le decor et les personnes en charge du camping étaient sensationnel

Liked We only had one night but what a night … hispitality goes beyond!
We loved the ‘family table’ were everybody comes together and talks about everything and nothing at all.

Liked Wonderful hosts in a beautiful location. We were welcomed by Marc as soon as we arrived who showed round the site. The site is rural with an array of animals from peacocks to horses. We loved wondering along the olive groves with our dog and the wine was fab.

Disliked Not really a dislike about this site.

Liked Very friendly owners, relaxed attitude, great unrestricted pitches, great selection of animals roaming around, and a fantastic BBQ!

Disliked Only one shower and two toilets for the whole campsite and one night there were 20 people staying!

Liked Other reviews talk about the warmth and friendliness of the site. They’re not exaggerating. It immediately felt like a family, with pets. Lots of pets which provided endless opportunities to interact or just watch their funny little ways. People mention the limited toilets and bathrooms but mostly it just isn’t a problem. I am so interested to see the site once the plans have been completed.
Walks and cycle rides to enjoy the nature were wonderful and a testament to organic land management. In fact you really didn’t need to leave the site to see 65 species of birds! Morning yoga was a joy and the swimming pool was excellent. The BBQs were fabulous and a chance to sample the Monte das Louzeiras wines, peri peri, salt and olive oil. We’ve left with loads of gifts.
Mark and Anna are fantastic and genuine hosts and their beautiful daughter is a delight. Everyone that works there is invested and we were too by the end of our chilled fortnight. Thank you.

Liked We absolutely loved our stay at this campsite and only wished we could stay longer. The whole atmosphere is one of peace, quiet and authenticity. The owner Mark was so welcoming giving us a tour, pointing out all the animals to the children and making us feel at home explaining where we could explore and suggesting we pick salad from the salad wall in the courtyard. We ordered a bottle of their wine and the service was outstanding, he bought it over chilled with glasses. The children absolutely loved spending time with beautiful Luna the doggy and playing with all the cats. Mark also allowed the children to look at some newborn baby kittens which was an amazing experience! Thankyou so much we can’t wait to come back!

Disliked I think the improvements to the toilets as other people have said will be amazing but it didn’t ruin our trip :)

Local attractions

Just because you’re in landlocked Beja doesn’t mean that there are no water activities… the Alqueva (45 minutes’ drive) is the largest dam in western Europe, and there’s more than one way to take in the landscape. Take to the water with a canoe, paddleboard or boat or cruise around the shore on walking and mountain biking trails past castles. Along the route is Luz (an hour), a village that originally sank beneath the dam before being relocated, and the medieval houses of Monsaraz (an hour and five minutes). The area around the lake is a popular patch for stargazers; in Alentejo, the stars are often very vivid. In the way of water, pretty Pulo do Lobo (50 minutes) – which means ‘wolf’s leap’ in Portuguese – is another gorgeous spot. On the river Guadiana, the gorge has the tallest waterfall in south Portugal. Take a picnic trek or grab a bite to eat in the local villages.
