  • Small, peaceful site in the Peruvian Alps with stunning mountain views
  • Maras 10 minutes' drive; half an hour to Urubamba
  • Moray Archaeological Zone within walking distance
If you’re heading to the Peruvian Andes, chances are you’re hoping to see a stunning mountain view or few… and it's fair to say you’ll have plenty of those at Tres Nevados. This small site is tucked away in a rural spot about 10 minutes' drive from the town of Maras, and it's got spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks of Chicon, Verónica and Pumahuanca, among others. This is a simple site with just the essential facilities, including toilets, hot showers, wifi, spring water and a small café serving meals. You’re welcome to bring a barbecue or get a campfire going (firewood is available for an additional fee) – either one makes a wonderful accompaniment to a sunset drink or an evening of stargazing. You may find that you're content just to sit and admire the views from your pitch – but if not, you’ll be well placed to get out for mountain hikes, or other outdoor activities including birdwatching, paragliding, climbing, horse riding and rafting (Urubamba, about half an hour's drive away, is a good place to find activity providers, and guided hikes can be booked directly on site). The scenery may be jaw-dropping, but it’s not the only draw to this area. It’s also full of fascinating history, with a good number of archaeological sites to visit nearby. The Moray Archaeological Zone is the closest at about 20 minutes' walk away, but you should certainly also check out the Salt Mine of Maras and perhaps stop by some of the other ancient sites in the area. Tres Nevados is actually on land with marine fossils, so it's a mighty interesting place itself.

Local attractions

The first place you should go while staying here is of course Zona Arqueologica Moray – it’s only 20 minutes' walk/three minutes’ drive away, and one of the real treasures of the Sacred Valley. The highlight is the group of circular terraces that descend 150 metres from top to bottom – surrounded by the stunning Andean scenery they're quite the sight (even if no one is quite sure why the Inca built them here). If that’s whetted your appetite for more of that fascinating history, you’ll be pleased to hear there's plenty more nearby. The stone structures of Cheqoq (15 minutes) and the archaeological site at Chinchero (35 minutes) give an insight into Inca culture. See a different side at the colonial Templo Tiobamba (15 minutes) and the traditional village of Chichubamba (35 minutes), where you can tour local homes and join various workshops. Another must-see is the Salt Mine of Maras (half an hour), run by the community and made up of over 3,000 evaporation pools. You might also manage to see them from above if you take a flight with Paragliding Cusco (half an hour).
