General
- Dog-friendly camping site at the foot of the Waitakere Ranges
- A short walk to Piha beach or Lion Rock; 45 minutes’ drive to Auckland
- Playground and direct access to a bush walk to the Kitekite Falls
Waterfalls, forests and bush walking trails just 45 minutes’ drive from lively Auckland… that’s what’s up for grabs on a break at Piha Domain Motor Camp at the western foot of the Waitakere Ranges in Piha. This Auckland Region camping site is all about high-quality service, a safe family environment and bags of activities nearby – after all, the stunning black-sand Piha beach is just 10 minutes’ walk away and rocky coastlines, coastal forests and splendid waterfalls are a given in this area.
The folk here are focused on customer satisfaction, so the set-up includes a kitchen and laundry area (with plenty of picnic tables for you to get dining alfresco style), a toilet and shower block and playground for the kids’ playtimes.
With the airport 46 kilometres away, this is a nice stop to start or finish your holiday without staying in Auckland city itself. With wild surf, black-sand beaches and plentiful hikes, there’s plenty in the way of scenery and outdoor activities…
Head right into the bush from the camping site, as within half an hour’s walk, you’ll reach the stunning Kitekite Falls and its swimming hole. Or wander down to Piha beach… for those new to the surf, the surf school will help you to catch your first wave and mind the surfing conditions (just book ahead to get a place). It’s a 400-metre walk from the camping site’s football field and a 20-minute climb up Lion Rock for spectacular views up and down the coast too.

Art connoisseur? Piha’s West Coast Gallery (two minutes’ walk) is just across the road and next door to the volunteer fire station for cool exhibitions and events. Hiking fan? The Mercer Bay Loop Walk (five minutes' drive) will take you past a fortified village with views of the Piha coastline. Beach buff? Plenty of that too…
When you’re not on Piha’s black sand beach, there’s the remoter Karekare Beach (10 minutes) with some sweet views and another waterfall with a swimming hole a small trek away from the car park. Beaches that are further away include the peaceful Kaitarakihi Beach (40 minutes) or its popular neighbour, Cornwallis Beach (40 minutes), where sea kayaking, swimming or fishing off the pier at Cornwallis Wharf are some ways to dive right into the thick of things.
Of course, a day out in Auckland (45 minutes) is an attractive option too, and there’s a lot of reasons why, with Auckland Zoo (40 minutes), volcano landscapes, views from the Sky Tower (45 minutes) and the whale or dolphin safaris that depart from the twin harbours.
