  • Family-friendly site on the edge of a large wood
  • Five kilometres from the Belgian border
  • Heated pool, sports court, café-bar, playground and TV room
Here's a nifty idea for a Holland hol. How excellent would it be to roam around a peaceful expanse of South Netherlands woodland, countryside and nature area by foot, pedal or horseback – then cross over the border into Belgium a measly few kilometres away to tick off another country on your European holiday checklist? Most excellent indeed, sensible sorts will surely know. Let it all come to pass at Camping De Spaendershorst, a family-friendly site five minutes' drive from the North Brabant village of Esbeek, and on the edge of a huge woodland nature reserve that spreads over the border into Belgium. This is a green and peaceful setting for active hols around the local walking, cycling and horse riding trails, or as a base for day trips to the Efteling fantasy theme park and the Speelland Beekse Bergen amusement park and safari park. Pitches are spacious here and the vibe friendly, with the team ready to help out with any info or assistance you might need on the site or the local area. Regular activities are arranged in summer season for kids, so grownups can get on with the more essential business of thoroughly sampling the coffee and eatery treats of the café-bar or roaming around seeking a thoroughly secluded spot for an hour or two of serenity under the sun. Your little darlings should also be stoked with the heated outdoor pool available to guests, and with the playground, sports court and games room with TV at their disposal too. Re the essentials, grownups may care to learn that amenities include a well-maintained shower and toilet block, plus a laundry room, a washing-up area and free wifi.

Local attractions

Get out into this green and peaceful land: from the site you can easily reach the Rovertse Heide nature area about five kilometres from the Belgian border, just the ticket for all sorts of Kempen region outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, canoeing and horse riding. Hiking routes of three, seven and seven and a half kilometres start from the car park opposite the house of Oranjebond, less than a kilometre away; for cycling or lengthier active days, take your wheels along the 31-kilometre Gorp and Roovert Route, the 46-kilometre Smokkelaarsroute or the 57-kilometre Aa-valleiroute, all accessible from the VVV tourist office in Hilvarenbeek. Take under-12s to the amusement park of Speelland Beekse Bergen for a family day out among rides, water rides, pedalo boating, racing, pony riding and regular events such as pirate or cowboy days – all on a parkland space that includes a large sandy beach if you need a bit of a breather. The park is run by the same company as the nearby Safaripark Beekse Bergen: buy a combo ticket for both to get the best deals. About half an hour away there's the Efteling fantasy theme park, with rides, attractions and live entertainment in a fairyland setting populated by elves, trolls and other fantastic beings.
