- Spacious family-friendly site a kilometre from Appelscha
- On the edge of the Drents-Friese Wold National Park
- Lots of playground kit, kids' club and pool with water play area
Some folk head off on hols in search of peace and quiet; others like to fill their downtime with energetic antics. Whichever camp you place yourself in (or if you gracefully straddle both), you’ll be right at home at Camping Alkenhaer, a friendly Friesland site a kilometre from the centre of Appelscha.
This is a place that cunningly plonks itself at the centre of the Venn diagram of forest times and family adventures. In search of a restful corner to read/sunbathe/crack open a beer? There’s heaps of space to spread out around the gardens, and plenty of trees to ensure you can always find a quiet spot when you want to sneak off for a snooze in the shade.
Guests with something rather more active on their wish list can run about on the sports field, bounce on the air trampoline or splash about at the outdoor pool and water play area. There’s also a whole heap of playground kit spread around the site, niftily placed for parents to multitask keeping a beady eye on their offspring and putting their feet up. More small-person entertainment is sorted in the summer hols, when a programme of daytime and evening activities is laid on.
Appelscha is a short five-minute bike ride away from Camping Alkenhaer if you’d like to head out for eats (and bikes to hire for the jaunt if you’ve not brought your own wheels). An even easier option is to stick around on site for a meal at the cosy restaurant, or on its outdoor terrace if the sun decrees it so.

Local attractions
Dutch hols are made for bike rides: bring your wheels or hire on site for outings to local villages (Veenhuizen and Dwingeloo are fine choices), or to pedal your way around the Drents-Friese Wold National Park, a few minutes away. Many kilometres of walking trails cross the 6,000-hectare park too if you’d prefer to do your exploring on foot – the sand dunes here are particularly scenic.
For more fresh air, take a trip to the Fochteloërveen nature reserve (15 minutes’ drive) – climb the lookout tower for birdwatching and some ace views over the surrounds. Not all the local landscapes are native though: the residents of the Taman Indonesia animal park (half an hour’s drive) are from the more exotic end of the spectrum.
Rides galore for small sorts await at the Duinen Zathe amusement park (five minutes’ drive); for something on a larger scale plot a course to Drouwenerzand theme park (35 minutes). And if anyone’s showing signs of bad behaviour, a cautionary trip to the National Prison Museum (20 minutes) might be just the ticket for curbing that naughty streak.
