- Small dog-friendly site surrounded by the Drenthe countryside
- A 25-minute drive to Dwingelderveld National Park and Boswachterij Gee
- On-site café; alongside the Orange Canal for fishing and swimming
From sky-blue lakes to national parks and fun water parks, there’s a lot to get stuck into from Minicamping het Hijkerveld. Surrounded by the Drenthe countryside, this is a prime place to get into some wildlife appreciation too, with Hijkerveld nature reserve 25 minutes’ walk away and rural scenery all around.
This is quite a small site and it’s certainly quiet, making it a proper spot to unwind. There’s a café on site where you can fill up your tummy before setting off – perhaps along the Orange Canal for a spot of wild swimming or fishing, as the waterway runs past the site. The site also runs regular activities, from walks through lesser-known local beauty spots to riding on a horse and carriage.
These pitches once belonged to a farm, but now the site keeps its chickens, horses and a dog in their own areas. Luckily, those of you who like a little fur (or feather) therapy can stroke or brush the animals under the site’s supervision.
When it comes to facilities, there’s a toilet block on site for those essential needs. Otherwise, for snacks or missing items from your luggage, there are food shops in Beilen, 10 minutes’ drive away from the site.

Local attractions
How do you like your trails? Those of you with a thing for mountain biking will want to drift over to Col du Vam (20 minutes’ drive) for forest and meadow tracks, while those who prefer to put their trust in a sturdy pair of shoes can choose between the scenery of the popular Plankenpad walk in Dwingelderveld National Park (25 minutes) or forest trails in Boswachterij Gee (25 minutes).
While the greenery’s handsome as it is, there’s also the attractive blue waters of Blauwe Meer (15 minutes) and 't Nije Hemelriek (half an hour) too, a lake with an aqua park (waterslides and bouncy castles included).
When you’re ready to turn your attention to the sky, Westerbork’s observatory (15 minutes) will let you take a closer look at the stars and planets, while the rides at the Drouwenerzand Attractiepark B.V. theme park (half an hour) will take you up high.
Now for the learning along the way: Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork (10 minutes) is a remembrance camp with remains from World War II or there are boat and canoe trips around the trading towns in De Weerribben-Wieden National Park (45 minutes) for a look at the workings of older times.
