- Small and cosy family site on the banks of the Hudup River
- A 10-min drive from town with shops, donkey cart tours, walking tours
- Paradise for birdwatchers: more than 100 species counted in area
In need of a break from the fast pace of modern life? At Hudup Campsite, 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Maltahöhe in the Hardap region of southern Namibia, you get to slow everything down.
Being easily accessible from the C19 (the main road from Mariental), Hudup is a prime spot to use as a base for getting to grips with this part of Namibia. There are hiking trails to follow along the banks of the Hudup river, which runs past the site, and twitchers will want to keep an eye out for some of the more than 100 species of birds counted here. You’re especially likely to run into the African jacana, fish eagles or pelicans, which regularly visit the waters next to the site.
If that’s not enough exploration, trips to Bushman’s Canyon (so named for the bushmen who walked the valley before anyone else, using the river’s permanent water pools as their drinking spots) can be arranged on special request.
Back on site, embrace the peace and quiet by pursuing similarly peaceful activities: cast a line in the Hudup river, take a dip in the outdoor pool or relax in the dappled sunshine beneath the trees.
When your stomach starts crying out for food, stoke up the braai and get to cooking (grab the supplies in the Maltahöhe supermarket), then chow down next to the campfire as you gaze to the stars.

Local attractions
The area around Hudup Campsite is fairly sparse when it comes to tourist attractions, but that’s a big part of its charm – no crowds.
Nearby, there’s one thing that’s a definite must-visit: Maltahöhe’s Oahera Centre. The centre works to promote the traditions of the Nama people and their tongue-click-filled language. You can take a donkey cart ride, join a walking tour of desert plants, stroll around the shop full of African art and grab a bite at the restaurant, but be sure to call well ahead so you can hear the children’s choir on your visit.
Those who are happy to spend some time in the car can trek to the pseudo-medieval fortress of Duwisib Castle or to explore the city of Mariental, both an hour and 10 minutes from Hudup. A little further on, tipplers can have a sip up close with the African animals at Neuras Wine and Wildlife Estate, under two hours from the site.
If you’re lucky enough to be continuing your journey beyond Hudup – or just love getting behind the wheel for lengthy drives – make your way to Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park or the spectacular Sesriem Canyon, Sossusvlei and Deadvlei in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, all between an hour 45 minutes and three hours from Hudup.
