Red Dune Camp is a prime spot for self-catered breaks in the Kalahari Desert. Set on Tranendal Farm in Namibia's wild south east, stays here are in the shadow of the enormous red sand dunes that give the site its name.
This remote site is all about helping you easily access the natural world. In that spirit, Red Dune Camp has set up a viewing platform where you can spot birds, game and other animals; it's also a great place to take in spectacular sunset panoramas of the desert.
That said, Red Dune Camp does tame the wilderness a bit and is home to some nifty facilities: toilets (both flushing and bush-style), showers, wifi, a shared kitchen and a communal braai area are all available here. Plentiful outdoor seating is set out so you can make the most of the views here by day or night (when the stars are really something to behold…).
The farm is home to a small-scale food shop where game meat, soft drinks and other desert snacks can be bought. The nearest town, Gochas, is 25 minutes away – here there's a supermarket that may well come in handy. The Mata Mata gate of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a bit further afield (an hour and 50 minutes), but wildlife fans will probably not mind travelling the extra distance to visit this big game hub.
