Can you see yourself spending peaceful evenings dining by the river as the sun goes down? If you can, Kunene River Lodge, 50 kilometres from Ruacana, may be the place for you. (And if you can't, a quick look at the pics may help…)
The river’s a fairly significant one, forming the natural boundary between Namibia and Angola, and it’s also rather scenic to boot. So it’s no surprise to find that it’s the centre of attention for the lodge’s setup: you can fish in its waters, take an early-morning birding cruise or sip sundowners on a sunset boat trip. And of course you can gaze out at it (and the open landscapes beyond) from the prime position of a table on the bar-restaurant’s deck.
If you’re up for a bit of river-based activity the folks here can help you organise days of whitewater rafting; canoes can be hired for those who’d prefer the water to come at them in a less churning manner. There’s plenty of scope for hiking in the surrounds, and local guides can arrange visits to traditional Himba settlements.
In contrast to all the adventures nearby, the lodge itself is a haven of peacefulness. Regular visits from native birds and other wildlife makes it a rewarding spot to sit quietly under a tree, and you can trot off to the outdoor pool for a dip if you’re getting a tad overheated.
Pleasingly spacious and shaded pitches have access to a braai area and toilet blocks with hot and cold showers.

Local attractions
As you may imagine, you’re fairly far removed from significant civilisation here (that’s what you’ve come for, right?) Roaming by road can be tricky even for those bumping around in a four wheel drive, so it’s a fine idea to put yourselves in the hands of the experts on site for your outings.
A popular (if hair-raising) trip here is a half-day of whitewater rafting on the Ondorusu Gorge, organised from the site and accompanied by trained guides who’ll do their best to make sure you don’t topple out. Canoe trips can be had instead if you’re less fond of adrenaline rushes, and leisurely cruises putter down the river at dawn (for the birdwatchers) and sunset (for those who can’t stomach an early start).
If you’ve ever yearned to encounter a traditional African tribe, here’s the place to do it – local guides have permission to bring guests to local settlements to meet Himba people still living life as they have for many centuries, well away from 21st-century tech. Keen twitchers may also like to rope in guides to help them spot rare birds including the Cinderella Waxbill and Angolan Cave Chat.
