  • Quiet site on the edge of a forest in Little Switzerland
  • Direct access to the Syndicat d'Initiative Medernach barefoot path
  • Pool, paddling pool, restaurant, shop and spotless modern amenities
What a smashing setting for peaceful and scenic Luxembourg stays. Camping Auf Kengert is in a quiet and greenly scenic setting near Larochette in the canton of Mersch, surrounded by the spectacular scenery of Little Switzerland. There's direct access from here to the Syndicat d'Initiative Medernach barefoot path, taking you into the adjacent small forest via a variety of different textures to feel under your toes. Dozens of the scenic walks of the Little Switzerland region are accessible nearby, including the 112-kilometre marked hiking and biking path of the Mullerthal Trail. There's no boisterous entertainment or deafening disco here, just a serene, laidback vibe amid heaps to do for all ages. Kids have a big and sandy outdoor playground to keep them busy in the fresh air, and an excellently-sized indoor playground too to retreat to if the weather's not fully co-operative. Also on site are an outdoor pool and a paddling pool, toasty at all times thanks to its solar heat collector system. The restaurant is open all season, for meals around the cosy log fire in the colder months, and on the sunny terrace in summer. For alfresco eats of your own choosing, build up a barbecue or campfire to cook up supplies from the well-stocked site shop. Pitches on site are surrounded by trees, shrubs and hedges, home to birds and other wildlife: if you're on the trail of more nature while here, ask the team for an 'adventure rucksack', which you can use on a nature spotting foray into the adjoining forest. As with the pool, restaurant and shop, the washroom blocks are fully accessible to disabled guests, although the Camping Auf Kenger team asks guests to please note that the site is on a gentle slope.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Location was perfect; very quiet. Restaurant and bar was very good. Ideal stopover for longer journeys. Large, well drained pitches.

Disliked: No hand soap or dryers in Ladies loos.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: A little tightly packed but this was a good site to be at on our european tour. I liked that the water tap was about 2m from the van and the grey water drain about 3m. It was a hot few days so the pool was very welcome and a good size too. Being on foot with 2 dogs we also liked the nearby woodland with it's many well signposted paths to Larochette and the castle (not quite jaw dropping but still worth a visit). The supermarket in town was pretty good too. Showers and toilets were clean and in good order (in the newer block) and the shop had a decent range of food and drink.

Disliked: Not really the camps fault but it was really really hot and ours was the only pitch without any shade. I could have asked to move but it was a tough enough squeeze to get my 7m van in there in the first place.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Very peaceful in early April. Rural setting, clean facilities. Lots of space indoors for dishwashing. Can wash and dry clothes. Order bread for the morning and it has a shop. Restaurant if wish and food fine and main course good value. Friendly staff. Most folk in Luxembourg speak English. Recycle bins. Lots of walks from the site for the dog. Small outdoor pool though not open. I imagine it will be very popular with families. Extended our stay.

Disliked: Child disappointed as all deserts icecream and he is dairy free. Also €9 so relieved! I hear that it will be very popular with families. Motorhome positioned at the top of site nearer the pool.

Local attractions

Take the barefoot trail from the site to feel varied terrain like grass, sand, stone and wood beneath your toes, then source a map a reception and set off on a local stretch of the Mullerthal Trail around the rock formations, brooks and spectacular views over the Sûre valley. Local town Larochette on the White Ernz river is overlooked by the partial ruins of 11th-century Larochette Castle, open to the public daily from Easter until the end of October. Castle fans should also see one of the biggest fortified castles this side of the Rhine at Vianden, within half an hour's drive, and the triangular pile of nearby Bourscheid, high on a promontory overlooking the Sûre river. Echternach, Luxembourg City and Trier in Germany are all 30 to 60 minutes' drive away.
