  • Oak and pine forest setting on the green hills of Montalbano
  • Spectacular views and peaceful setting an hour from Florence
  • Pools, bar and restaurant; bike, e-bike and car rentals
Real pretty… and pretty fine. Bag a break at Tuscany's Camping Barco Reale for a fab forest setting within easy day trip distance of Florence, and where you can pitch up among oaks and pine trees among spectacular views: do, immediately, see pics… This lush spot is on the viewsome hills of Montalbano, famed for their rich green landscapes, plentiful vineyards and the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci – and he apparently knew a thing or two about stunning sights. It's a kilometre and a half from the tourist town of San Baronto, 25 minutes' drive from Pistoia (Italian city of culture back in 2017, arty sorts) and just under an hour by car from Florence (or an hour and 20 minutes by bus). You'll need to slip several site-based days into your Barco Reale itinerary too, even if your ambitions rise no further than idling around the grounds gazing contentedly into the distance. Should you feel slightly more active, there are gorgeous pools – with gorgeous views – for alfresco dips, and sports and games fields for gently competitive afternoons. The team also arranges a good selection of activities all day long in summer, from cooking lessons to evening musicals. Bike, electric bike and car rental are all available on site, as is a horse riding service if you'd rather trot off into the hills instead. You can also book active adventures including canyoning, caving, climbing, coasteering, mountain biking and via ferrata trips with Barco Reale's sister company: ask for details when you arrive. A bar and restaurant are also on site.

Badmutsen in zwembad
Geen kraantje op de plek.

Liked Luogo immerso nel verde della Toscana. Silenzioso e ventilato, nonostante il caldo. Ben organizzato e ben gestito per famiglie con bimbi, come la mia.
Ristorante curato e piatti gustosi. Piscine atte a soddisfare più esigenze. Bella l'area dedicata agli esercizi all'aperto.
Giorni trascorsi con serenità e comodità.
Grazie.

Parcelas amplias y en un entorno espectacular.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (medium)

Liked Beautiful setting and stunning views across the hills and valleys. Pools looked very inviting. Excellent facilities - clean and modern.

Disliked Need a swimming hat for the pools which we didn’t have - I understand this is the norm for Italian pools. Wi-Fi only available in one small area and even then it was sporadic.

Bra utgångspunkt för att utforska Toscana till ettrimligt pris.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch (medium)

Local attractions

These green hills are a mighty popular region for biking, so hire wheels from the Barco Reale team and set off with picnic and camera. Local town San Baronto has easy access to some stellar cycling along the Montalbano pass and down to the valleys: the towns of Pistoia and Prato are 15 and 25 kilometres from here for scenic cycling day trips. By car, it's 20 minutes to Vinci, birthplace – but of course – of one arty Leonardo. A potter around here is highly recommended if you're in the region, to visit the Museo Leonardiano and see some of the inventions the great one sketched in his famed notebooks, and to amble around his birthplace house Casa Natale di Leonardo. As well as Florence (an utter must-see), day trip options include Lucca, 50 minutes' drive away and Pisa, around an hour and 10 minutes. Less culturally, but probably more popular with the kids, the Pinocchio Park in Collodi is 50 minutes away.
