This spacious, scenic and family-friendly site is well sorted for Sicilian beach days: the nearest sands are those of Torrente Mangano, a few hundred metres away, and several more fine seaside stretches are a cinch to get to from there. Camping Al Yag is an Ionian Sea resort in Sicily's Catania province, on the island's east coast. It's a couple of kilometres from its nearest village Mangano, which is in a lush land of lemon trees a short drive or bike ride from famed Mount Etna. Giarre is about five kilometres to the north and the coastal city of Acireale around eight to the south; Catania and Taormina are both within 40 minutes' drive. Fishing, golf and cycling are all available nearby, but you'll want to laze about on site too: there's a big outdoor pool with sun loungers alongside; a pétanque court for getting (slightly) active under the Sicilian sun, and a bar and restaurant to keep everyone fully fed and watered. Evening entertainment is available too. A convenience store is on hand for groceries and essentials.

Local attractions

Days on the beach(es) first of all, of course… when you're up for exploring away from the sands, Giarre about five kilometres to the north of Al Yag has a Mediterranean aquarium, an 11th-century church and a museum on the history and customs of the Etna people. To the south and at the foot of Mount Etna, the coastal city of Acireale is a famed historic and arty place, dating back a couple of thousand years and home to the Accademia dei Dafnici e degli Zelanti, Sicily's biggest art academy. Among its handsome old buildings are St Peter's and St Sebastian's basilicas and the 17th-century cathedral; also see La Timpa nature reserve overlooking the Ionian Sea, and the Fortezza del Tocco fort, now also a nature reserve. Mascali, Milo, Riposto, Sant'Alfio, Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea are all within reach for more coastal days; inland, the big theme park of Etnaland can be reached within about 50 kilometres.
