Fancy sampling a couple of glasses of wine on your Piedmont break? That's certainly possible at Il Tesoro di Miro – the pitches here are next to an educational farm and winery, and you can book in for tastings of the vegan and organic wines along with other local products. This is a very rural, agricultural area and the site is in a splendid position for making the most of that peaceful countryside setting. You may like to explore the area on foot or by bike, or perhaps you'd prefer just to chill out on site, looking out at the fabulous views you get from this location in the Alto Monferrato hills. In order to preserve the natural environment, this site has been set up with minimal facilities rather than lots of concrete constructions. You’ll stay on large pitches tucked away among the trees and meadow grasses, with access to water and electric hook-ups if you wish. Bathroom facilities and a wifi service are provided, but please note there is no chemical disposal point on site. Likewise, there’s no pool on site, but there’s a swimming spot in the river about three kilometres away for when you fancy a refreshing dip. So far, so rural… but in fact you won’t be all that far from civilisation, as it’s only a five-minute drive to Cartosio for a restaurant, a cheese shop and a public pool, or 20 minutes to Acqui Terme, which has a good collection of shops and places to eat as well as all its historic attractions.

Hosts are super friendly and the spot is amazing, peaceful, with great mountain views. Lovely animals and quiet setting. Rooms are spotless. Showers a bit pricey, but worth it for the spring water! No eateries close by.

Liked We arrived on a sweltering 38° day, fully intending to camp, but the heat made it impossible. The hosts kindly offered us a last-minute stay in their bnb instead, and we couldn’t have been more grateful. The accommodation was spotless, modern, and clearly very new. The next morning, they even served us a delicious Italian breakfast, which was such a thoughtful touch. Throughout our stay, the hosts went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. Highly recommended for anyone looking for exceptional hospitality.

Local attractions

Bring some decent walking shoes and/or a bike with you, because this is an area that’s very rewarding for slow-paced travels, taking in the scenery from trails through the woods and valleys. There are climbing spots dotted throughout the area as well, and places where you can take a cool dip in a river or lake. The local village of Cartosio (five minutes' drive) is worth a stop to see its medieval tower, listed as an important monument by the FAI (the Italian version of the National Trust). After that, make your way to Acqui Terme (20 minutes), a gorgeous town that’s well known for its Roman bridge, Romanesque cathedral and Castello dei Paleologi, home to an archaeological museum. You can also have a soak in the thermal waters there, said to have therapeutic powers. For a change of scenery, head to the coast for a dip in the Ligurian Sea from one of the beaches in Savona (an hour), or take it one step further by signing up for a scuba diving trip to see what lies below the surface.
