  • Family site in the Marche hills, half an hour’s drive from Senigallia
  • Castelleone di Suasa five minutes’ drive; Museo del Balì 35 minutes
  • Pool; playground and kids’ club; kids’ cinema and disco; yoga sessions
The gentle hills of the Marche, in central Italy, are the splendid setting for Camping Suasa, a small-scale site between the Adriatic Sea and the foothills of the Apennines (Monte Catria – the region’s highest peak – is 35 minutes away). The nearest town, with shops and restaurants, is Castelleone di Suasa (less than five minutes’ drive). Owners Dora and Myron, a young Dutch couple, are keen to promote this as a child-friendly site, and their claim is amply supported by assorted facilities for young guests. These range from safe play areas (including a playground with a sand pit and a climbing wall), to activities such as football tournaments, open-air screenings of age-appropriate movies, and a disco in the woods. There’s also a popular children’s breakfast, which sees the kids eat together before taking part in supervised activities such as crafting, blackberry picking or singing. While the kids are kept busy and entertained, the grown-ups can chill in the pool, maybe with a glass of vino (from a local producer) in hand, or take part in a relaxed yoga class (all levels of fitness and suppleness are catered for). For something a little more active, there’s a padel court a five-minute drive away, or you can explore the local countryside, visiting places like Lavandeto Corinaldo (lavender fields; 10 minutes) or the Cascata di Valrea waterfall and nature reserve (15 minutes). In addition to spacious pitches, the site comes with a toilet/shower block, a washing-up area and a launderette.

Local attractions

Senigallia (half an hour’s drive) has 13 kilometres of beach with sand so fine, it’s known locally as the ‘velvet beach’. After a swim in the shallow waters of the Adriatic, take a relaxed stroll along the promenade stopping for a gelato or drink, then head into the historic centre to visit the imposing Rocca Roveresca fortress. The Museo del Balì, in pratica la scienza! (35 minutes) is a hands-on museum with interactive displays for all ages exploring subjects such as electromagnetism, waves and motion, plus a digital planetarium and (for those keen to see the real thing) an astronomic observatory. Attractions in the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi National Park (40 minutes) include the Frasassi Caves, a network of limestone caverns with spectacular rock formations; the Tempio del Valadier, a 19th-century sanctuary within a cave; and scenic points such as Big Bench #316, in Genga.
