Local attractions
Luce sul Lago sits in the middle of the Castelli Romani, a landscape carved out by volcano action and home to a collection of historic hilltop villages. Kickstart your exploration of the area at Nemi (10 minutes’ drive), with its medieval streets, colourful houses and shops selling speciality wild strawberries; grab a coffee at a terrace bar and soak up the views of Lake Nemi sparkling below.
Castel Gandolfo (also 10 minutes) has centuries of history behind it; Emperor Domitian once had a villa here, which is now the site of the exquisite Barberini Gardens. It is also the summer residence of the Pope, and the sprawling Papal Palace dominates the skyline. Nearby, you can rent pedal boats to explore the crystal‑clear waters of Lake Albano (15 minutes).
Nature-lovers can explore trails in Castelli Romani Regional Park (10 minutes), wander through ancient chestnut forests and clamber up to viewpoints scattered through the hills. And at the end of a day in the fresh air, you can reward yourselves with Lazio wines and traditional Roman dishes like cacio e pepe (pasta, pepper and Pecorino) in local trattorias.
