If you’d like a slice of history and spectacular views thrown in with your Emilia Romagna camping holiday, you’d be wise to book in at Agricampeggio Le Cave in Val d’Arda. This stunning spot has been developed on the site of a former stone quarry set on a hilltop, and offers up truly stunning vistas over forested hills and valleys. Along with the views, active families will find much to keep them happy here, including a resin-lined natural swimming pool with a hot tub and splash fountain as well as padel, tennis and pickleball courts. Nature trails wind through the forest and hills adjacent to the site, and there’s lots of space to have a run around too. The original quarry has now been replanted with organic vineyards; you can taste the produce (and buy some wine to take home with you) at Le Mole di Santa Franca, the farm’s trattoria where lunch and dinner are served. There’s also a picnic spot taking in those far-reaching views, while practical amenities include double sinks for laundry and dishwashing as well as a shower block with bags of hot water.

Ardent foodies will jump at the chance to taste regional specialities including tortelli pasta and pisarei e fasò (dumplings with beans) at local outlets like Illica (10 minutes’ drive), which also produces organic and vegan sparkling wines. Guided tours of several nearby farms are easily arranged, so you can discover other traditional specialities of the Piacenza and Parma regions. Mountain bikes and e-bikes are available for use by cyclists itching to get out onto hilly trails and explore steep forest tracks with minimal effort. You can also follow scenic walking trails through canyons of Piacenziano Regional Park (20 minutes), which is rich in fossils. Check out the cottages in Castell’Arquato (also 20 minutes), and you’ll see fossilised shellfish embedded in their sandstone façades. Vigoleno (again 20 minutes) is a fortified and atmospheric hilltop village with a storied past; dating from the Middle Ages, it looks over the Stirone Valley and is dominated by its mighty castle. You can walk the ramparts, climb to the top of the keep and check out displays of historic weaponry.
