There are almost endless reasons that could bring one to spend a spell in Ardèche. Far-famed gorges? That's a big one, for sure. Cracking caves? Also up there. But beyond the region's headline sites there are also oodles of riverside villages with stone houses, local markets and cosy bistros where you can try out local grub. Rosières, home to Camping Le Saut Du Loup, is just such a spot. This site is about a 20-minute walk from the village centre, which means there's all the more room for adults to relax and for the kids to run around in. Within these fab five hectares of greenery – much of which is made up of sweet-smelling South of France pine forest – there's also an outdoor pool with sun loungers, a snack bar where you can pick up some sizzling fast food or a crêpe and a pétanque area where new neighbours can bond over a bit of friendly competition. There's also a peaceful river around 100 metres away in case you need any extra nature time. Entertainment is organised by Camping Le Saut Du Loup in high season. Don't worry about looking daft – diving into zumba, country-themed hoedowns or whatever they've got in store is a sure-fire way to keep serotonin levels high. That said, it's good to know that free wifi is available for teens who’d rather skulk around on their phones instead.

Local attractions

Rosières (20 minutes' walk or a five-minute drive) is a fine place to start, especially if you're here at the same time as its biweekly July and August market. There's also a community-run cinema here in case you fancy dinner and a show. On the other side of the river Baume, Joyeuse (five minutes) has more pretty streets to saunter around, plus a couple of adventurous activity outfits that can take you out kayaking, canyoning or trekking with the pros. A little further afield, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc (30 minutes) has a smashing natural stone archway and some very visit-worthy caves. Aubenas (25 minutes) could also prove fertile ground for chilled jaunts: its handsome château and renaissance buildings are definitely stand-out sights (and this scenic part of France sets the bar pretty high in that department…). Need to keep the small sorts happy? In no particular order, there's the Château des Roure (40 minutes), Le village de Gopher adventure park (30 minutes), Vogüé's miniature golf course (25 minutes) and Moby Parc theme park (an hour and 15 minutes) to tide you over.
