- Leafy family site with mountain views in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
- In Queyras Regional Natural Park; Mont-Dauphin half an hour’s drive
- Breakfast and takeaway service; mountain sports five minutes’ drive
Sitting at an altitude of 1,700 metres and backed by the snow-capped peaks of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Camping Onlycamp Les Mélèzes is also in the middle of Queyras Regional Natural Park and at the crossroads of the GR5 and GR58 hiking trails. This happy location makes it a superb stop for sporty types keen to stretch their legs on challenging walks and bike rides.
But the site is also conducive to lingering on the grass pitches, partially shaded by larch trees, where you can soak up spectacular mountain views. It has been set up with all the facilities you need for a relaxing stay, including accessible-for-all hot showers (very welcome after a day scrambling about in the mountains), a washing machine, dryer and iron to keep everyone neat and tidy, and ice packs to keep your perishables fresh.
There’s a pre-booked bread and pastry service available for mornings, and takeaway food later in the day. If you need to keep toddlers occupied, take them to the playground with swings and climbing frames, while older kids amuse themselves with borrowed board games, ping-pong and pétanque matches.
All you budding athletes can go hiking, mountain biking and paragliding from Ceillac (five minutes’ drive), or keep the adrenaline levels on low with fishing on the Mélezet River and games of tennis.

Local attractions
Keen walkers or cyclists will be happy to know they have direct access to trails in wildlife-rich Queyras Regional Natural Park. There are testing yomps to be had in La Croix du Signal hiking area (five minutes’ walk), while families may prefer to follow the easier Rocher aux Marmottes (half an hour’s drive), all the while keeping an eye out for elusive fauna.
Ceillac (five minutes) is a lively hub where you can hire mountain bikes, go wild swimming or treat the kids to donkey trekking. Alternatively, get the blood pressure going with adventure sports at Canyon Béal Noir (55 minutes).
There are lots of postcard-pretty alpine villages to explore in the natural park as well. Lively Guillestre (20 minutes) is a tangle of medieval buildings backed by forested hills, while Mont-Dauphin (half an hour) is well worth a visit to explore its late-17th century fortifications. For a spectacular mountain drive, head up to the mountain-top Observatoire de Saint-Véran - Paul Felenbok (55 minutes), where you’ll be rewarded by equally stunning alpine views.
