  • Sports pitches and table tennis; next to miniature golf/bike rental
Sometimes, you're onto a winner. And sometimes – just sometimes – you'll come across a champion. Camping Le Champion is a popular two-hectare park on the green and grassy banks of the Charente river that comes top of the podium for its quiet vibes and location between the water and the pretty village of Mansle. With spacious pitches shaded by trees, guests at Camping Le Champion can look forward to well-maintained facilities, including a toilet block, showers, laundry facilities and amenities for tourers such as drainage points. Leisure facilities like a basketball pitch, a volleyball area, pétanque and table tennis tables are all provided too, and within the immediate surroundings of the park you can access a kids' playground, miniature golf, canoeing and bike hire too. Mansle village centre is just over the bridge, a few minutes' walk away, and has a handful of cafés and restaurants plus a small supermarket and a tourist information office. The surrounding area has lots to explore, whether you're heading to the larger town of Angoulême (30 minutes) or to the several local prehistoric sites that dot the local countryside.

Local attractions

Mansle is about a quarter of an hour's drive from Ruffec, an attractive town with a cinema, swimming pool and rose garden. Keep going north along the N10 road and you'll soon reach the medieval city of Poitiers (an hour), where an impressive cathedral, the Saint Jean Baptistery and several museums and art galleries will keep you entertained for hours. Head half an hour in the opposite direction and you'll reach Angoulême (30 minutes), a town known for its connection to comic books. Find out more about French, Belgian and American graphicists at the Musée de la Bande Dessinée, or head through the town before travelling west to Cognac (45 minutes) and into brandy country. To keep the kids entertained, you could head to Nature Feel, a treetop adventure course just outside Taizé-Aizie (20 minutes), or to either of the two go-karting courses just north of Angoulême. Younger or less adventurous kids might prefer a trip to see the exotic animals at La Vallée Des Singes (40 minutes), a zoo dedicated to monkeys, apes and lemurs.
