The little Charente-Maritime town of Esnandes is a special spot, with the coastline of Aiguillon Bay on one side and the wetlands of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park on the other. That means a break here gives you access to all sorts of gorgeous landscapes, whether you’re looking out to sea or exploring the inland waterways on a small boat. On the edge of this little town is Camping Animal King, a small site that’s equally well placed for the beach (just over a kilometre away) and the town’s shop, bakery and restaurant. There’s a long history of mussel cultivation in the town too, so it’s a great idea to seek out some seafood at the restaurant by the beach at least once. This location gives you easy access to lots of lovely parts of the coastline, including the lovely islands of Oléron, Aix and Île de Ré. The gateway to all of these is La Rochelle, 20 minutes’ drive away and also an excellent place to find attractions, activities and places to eat. The campsite has been kept to a manageable size, so you won't be crammed in with lots of other people. Shower and toilet facilities have been provided, along with an outdoor pool where you can have a nice refreshing dip after a long day out. Dogs are welcome, and you should be able to find plenty of places to walk them nearby.

A chill spot with big, shady spots and lekker helpful hosts. Close to La Rochelle and Île de Ré for cycling. Proper authentic feel, good value. Pool's a bit old but they're sorting it. Dogs welcome too, it's lekker quiet.

Liked Good location. People friendly and helpful.

Disliked Unfortunately caravan needed a bit of TLC and was tired. Smelt very musty.
We only stayed for one night but sadly wouldn't choose again.

Disliked Attention arnaque !!
J'ai réservé un mobil home pour les 17 et 18 octobre dans ce camping via leur plate-forme pitchup, pour m'entendre dire en arrivant qu'ils n'étaient pas au courant et que les mobil-home n'étaient pas disponibles à la location ponctuelle, du fait qu'ils étaient loués à l'année. Ils ont essayé de me trouver une pseudo solution (en gros ils ont proposé de nous loger dans un mobil home pour lequel le locataire n'était pas présent sur le week-end), solution que nous avons refusée et ils se sont engagés à nous rembourser. Par ailleurs l'adresse mail du camping n'est pas opérationnelle. Malgré plusieurs contact avec pitchup, par mail et avec le gérant par téléphone, je n'arrive pas à me faire rembourser les 150 € payés.

Disliked This site is a rundown neglected dump the washrooms are very old neglected and dirty half the sinks have no hot water there is only one male shower with a lock on the door there is a workshop on view full of junk and there are tatty old vans all over the place there is a duck farm next door which produces noise all night long the adjacent farm was spreading manure on the field which meant staying in my van with all the windows shut there is no public transport on Sundays

Liked The pitch was spacious ,the facilities were kept immaculately clean but dated . The staff were friendly and helpful .

Disliked Not the sites fault but not near a usable beach ! Near the sea but all mud .This was disappointing as was expecting some beach days .

Disliked Nous avons eu de la chance d'être en fin de saison avec peu de vacanciers. Mais j'imagine comme peut être problématique le nombre insuffisant de douches et de sanitaires lorsque le camping est plein. La piscine est un peu vétuste, froide et abîmée mais c'est toujours sympa d'y piquer une tête. Vu le tarif, il faut demeurer cohérent. Moi et mes enfants on a passé un super séjour avec notre tente !

Local attractions

A good place to start nearby is at the House of the Bay of the Marais Poitevin (10 minutes’ walk) for an insight into the area’s history and its role in the development of commercial mussel cultivation. More history is on display at Fort Boyard, commissioned by Louis XIV in the17th century. The offshore fortress can be visited on a boat trip from Rochefort (45 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, you may like to play a round of golf with a sea view on the 18-hole course at Golf la Rochelle La Prée (10 minutes) or spend a day in La Rochelle (20 minutes), visiting the aquarium and maritime museum or tackling the treetop trails of Vertigo Parc La Rochelle Aventure. Alternatively, cross the bridges to explore Île de Ré (20 minutes) or Oléron (an hour). Turning your attention inland is a good idea too, because the lush green landscapes of the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park are rather gorgeous. This area, often known as ‘Green Venice' because of its network of waterways, is a wildlife haven alive with birds, butterflies and dragonflies. There are walking and bike trails through the park, or you can join boat tours in Arçais (45 minutes).
