  • Peaceful site with easy access to Côte de Beauté beaches and resorts
  • Zoo, museums and amusement park of Royan within 20 minutes
  • Miniature golf and shop with organic local produce
Sick of morning commutes with hours spent behind the wheel? Free yourself from la voiture at Camping le Sorlut, a family-friendly site on the edge of the Charente-Maritime town of Cozes in Poitou-Charentes… to spend your hols in a haze that has nothing to do with exhaust fumes. The sights of Cozes are close at hand, a two-minute stroll leads to the vélorail station (on a line to the vineyards of Saintonge) and a 10-minute saunter to Rue Saint-Pierre puts two-wheelers on the long-distance GR 360 looped route that starts and ends in Saintes. Adventures under someone else’s steam are a cinch too – a bus station about five minutes’ walk from base has routes to the beaches and towns of the Côte de Beauté. On days when moving even that far feels like a stretch, there’s lots on site to entertain: play a round at the miniature golf course, go game-set-match on the ping pong tables, challenge other guests to pétanque and, during July and August, take a dip in the heated, open-air outdoor pool next door, which is a public pool. Foodies are well served here too: there’s a convenience store for picking up organic and local produce (order crates of fruit and veg when home-cooked meals are on the menu); a bread service during high season and ice cream to be nabbed when the heat starts setting in. A food truck visits the site twice a week, so you can stock up on homemade wraps, fries, tapas and drinks.

What customers say

A peaceful, family campsite with great staff, clean and shady pitches. Close to shops and town. Sanitary facilities basic for some, spotless for others. Pool nearby, extra cost. Some noise reported, but generally relaxed – many would return.

Liked Nothing. This is worst campsite I have ever stayed in.

Disliked If you have a tent do not stay here! There was dog poo on our pitch when we arrived. There was a siren going off all night and all afternoon from the neighbouring carpark, which kept us from sleeping. The sound of motorbikes and traffic from the road next to us also kept us awake. There's no soap or toilet paper, very unhygienic! If you have a campervan it would be okay, avoid if you're tent camping.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Good location close to town centre. Decent sized pitches, clean and tidy site, clean toilets and showers - although not enclosed so assume they might be cold in cooler temperatures. Close to very well stocked supermarket.

Disliked Chemical disposal point needs cleaning and updating - not pleasant using this.

Local attractions

What’s a getaway without some sandy days? Luckily no one has to find out round here as the beaches of Royan’s Grande Conche are just a 15-minute drive from base… This is a top spot for watersports and beachy activities, with standup paddleboarding, sandsurfing, canoeing and kayaking trips, and jetski outings along the seafront. Stick around Royan for museums and the Planet Exotica botanical garden and zoo, or opt instead for the sea lions, tigers and polar bears of Zoo La Palmyre, half an hour from base. More family days are within easy reach at Les Antilles de Jonzac waterpark, 40 minutes away. The banks of the Gironde estuary – the largest in western Europe – are about 15 minutes from the site, and the villages that cling to the shoreline are well worth a visit. Start with comely Talmont-sur-Gironde and its narrow streets of white houses with pretty blue shutters, before travelling onwards to Meschers-sur-Gironde and its Grottes de Matata cliff dwellings. For grown-up days, make the 50-minute journey to Cognac for tastings and distillery tours, castles, gardens and stately houses.
