If you’re looking for somewhere unusual to lay your head in Picardy, Camping Campix on the outskirts of historic Saint-Leu-d’Esserent (five minutes’ drive) is bound to intrigue… For this site has a leafy setting in a disused quarry, abandoned to nature in 1940 and now all but overgrown with trees, bushes and wild shrubs. The secluded grass pitches are all hidden away among the greenery for your privacy, and provide the vibe of wild camping (campfires are allowed), but with all the creature comforts of a modern site – namely, showers with constant hot water, toilets and a snack bar open in July and August. If you decide to do some local exploring, what’s even better is that this seemingly remote spot is in pole position for anyone wanting to spend a day at Parc Astérix (half an hour) and Disneyland Paris (an hour), or in romantic Paris itself (also about an hour).

  • The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Liked Lots of large pitches scattered around
Location beautiful

Disliked Main picture shows a pool
But does not have one in working order in fact it’s a derelict sight
This was a shame as we where only here for a night we had traveled for several hours and the 3 children with us wanted to swim
I except the fact I didn’t read the small print which would have said no pool available
But please don’t show a pool on your main picture when it clearly does not have one.

Liked Der kurioseste Platz den wir je hatten....der Besitzer suoer nett....wir konnten den Platz beliebig aussuchen.
Völlig verrücktes Gelände....für eine Nacht okay....Sanitär und Service warrn okay!

Disliked Fehlender Pool...sieht aus wie ein Lost Place...ebenso der ganze Platz wirkt so merkwürdig.....muss dringend erneuert werden!

Liked Hele leuke speeltuin voor de kinderen en een heel leuk zwembad. Locatie van de camping ten opzichte van zee, supermarkt en dorpjes.

Disliked Sanitaire voorzieningen, er werd te weinig schoon gemaakt, het douchewater was te koud, het afwaswater was veel te koud, douchehokjes zijn te krap. De code van de slagboom veranderd elke maand zonder dat we hierover bij aankomst geïnformeerd zijn. We kregen ook meerdere keren een verkeerde code.

Disliked Disappointed fact 2 years in a row no pool its under construction I booked it this year as was told when I complained last year next year no work been done so no wonder its not finished. Web shows lovely pictures of the pool but dont exist

Liked There was a relaxed feel to the campsite, with not too many strict rules and regulations (I.e around fires etc). We appreciated being able to choose our own pitch rather than being allocated one. The man at reception was helpful and friendly, with good English. The showers were hot with good water pressure. It was easy to walk into town but remote enough that you didn't hear cars or other noise.

The site sits north of Paris (about an hour’s drive), so you can have a day to explore the City of Lights, board a bateau-mouche cruise down the River Seine, visit art masterpieces in The Louvre and dine in Montmartre bistros. Another bucket-list attraction about the same distance away is the Palace of Versailles, where you can tour opulent apartments and wander the formal water gardens. Another grand palace is open for tours at sublime Chantilly (15 minutes), which also has an equine museum and stellar art collection; close by is the exceptional Gothic architecture of soaring Cathédrale Notre-Dame in Senlis (25 minutes).
