  • Small-scale site at a Tarn-et-Garonne sculpture garden and woodland
  • Lauzerte 10 minutes' drive; 45 minutes to Cahors or Montauban
  • Direct access to a Séoune river beach for paddling and fishing
The clue’s in the name here – the pitches at Jardin des Sculptures are within a garden full of outdoor artworks created from an assortment of recycled objects. That’s a wonderful setting in itself, but it gets even better when you learn that the garden is centred around an old mill on the banks of the Séoune river. This is a really lovely Tarn-et-Garonne location – full of arty character and local heritage and with direct access to a river beach area for paddling, swimming and fishing. There’s lots of space to relax here, whether you choose to wander around the site’s 6000 square metres of woodland or take a seat on a bench to read a book and admire the views. There’s a play area and a pétanque court to provide a little gentle activity for various ages, and the practical facilities include toilets, showers, a picnic room and wifi. The sculptures here will provide you with lots of interesting things to look at by day, and the lack of light pollution also means you’ll often have some excellent starry skies to see at night. You’re welcome to light a campfire or get a barbecue going to help you keep warm while stargazing. Other things to fill your days with? The surrounding area has plenty of options for walks, bike rides, swimming and other outdoor activities, and there are lots of wineries dotted around too. The medieval town of Lauzerte is about 10 minutes’ drive away, or you can reach Cahors, Montauban and Agen in less than an hour.

Local attractions

A good place to start is in nearby Lauzerte (10 minutes' drive), a hilltop medieval bastide that’s listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. It's got lots of well-preserved houses, a splendid baroque church and the lovely Pilgrim's Garden to visit. For more of the area’s history, visit the Musée La planète des moulins in Luzerch (35 minutes). For a full day out, there are some lovely towns to explore nearby. Cahors is known for both its art and its wine, and Montauban is a very pretty place with striking pink-brick buildings (both 45 minutes). Agen (50 minutes) is another good option, for a walk along the banks of the Garonne and some time exploring the Museum of Fine Arts. Back out in the countryside, you may like to go horse riding from Ferme équestre Le Cheval Blanc (half an hour) or take a new woolly friend for a walk with Les lamas de Pechzen (20 minutes). On a hot day, head to Aquazone Montcuq (20 minutes) for lake swimming, paddleboarding or a bouncy run across the floating obstacle course.
