Tent pitches partially shaded by trees
Pitches in the shade of trees
Around the site

  • Quiet site edging the River Célé in the Lot village of Saint-Sulpice
  • Château des Anglais 10 minutes’ drive; Grottes de Lacave 55 minutes
  • Small basics shop and a relaxed bar; river beach and municipal pool
When you’re in need of a bit of peaceful R&R, book in at Camping Le Célé in the Lot. Chances are you’ll fall in love with the place. Why? Because of its calming ambience and leafy valley setting by the River Célé in Saint-Sulpice, a postcard-pretty village where higgledy-piggledy houses are backed by soaring cliffs. This laidback spot has plenty of shade under a canopy of trees; if that’s not enough to keep you cool in the height of the summer, have a splash around off the river beach or swim a few laps of the municipal pool adjoining the site. If you’re looking for sightseeing and sporting inspo, there’s up-to-date information at reception, where you can pick up grocery basics in the small store. There’s also an informal bar with a terrace, but for major shopping needs, you’ll need to head to Cajarc (20 minutes’ drive) and its hypermarket. Camping Le Célé is on a Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route through the Lot, and rewards travellers holding the official Pilgrim Passport with discounts at the bar.

Local attractions

If you’ve an interest in history, step back to Neolithic times with a visit to the burial chamber at Dolmen du Rat, or marvel at the extraordinary fortress remains clinging to the cliffside at Château des Anglais (both 10 minutes’ drive). There are lots of historic villages to check out too, starting with your home base of Saint-Sulpice, with its mellow-stone cottages topped with red roofs set against a steep cliffside. However, this region of the Lot is often associated with hardcore sports; you can go canoeing and kayaking along the river, or hiking, cycling and rock climbing in the surrounding hills. The subterranean cave diving at Emergence du Ressel (five minutes) is perhaps one activity best left to the experts. There are gentler adventures to be had exploring the Grottes de Lacave (55 minutes), a Jurassic-era cave system that you can trundle through on a mini electric train, but if that’s too tame for the kids, take them to Figeac Parc Aventures (35 minutes) to test their skills on high ropes and zipwires.
