Comfy and spacious apartment accommodation in the Lot valley, among the Cahors vineyards and a couple of minutes' drive from the ancient settlement – and llama walking – of Prayssac... sound splendid? But of course, so settle yourself down at Domaine de Claire Rive. Although grownups may be more interested in the surrounding Cahors vineyards, kids are fully sorted at this site: there's a good-sized playground, bowling, ping pong, and a summer club for ages four to 12 to keep them fully and frenetically occupied. A heated outdoor pool is also to hand for grownups, and kids of suitable size. Domaine de Claire Rive is tucked into a long loop of the Lot river, west of the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, 10 minutes' drive from Sarlat and an hour from Quercy and Gramat. If you're a dab hand on or in the water, the Caix nautical centre is 20 minutes away for sailing, swimming, paddleboarding and boating; if not, there's a beach here too for lengthy days of basking.

Local attractions

Prayssac first, perhaps: this pretty little place is hailed for its vineyards, its foie gras and its megalithic heritage including the Bertrandoune. Take one of the signposted hiking trails around town, or drop into the tourist office to arrange a donkey or llama ride from Prayssac to Puy-l'Évêque, 10 minutes' drive from the site. An indoor pool is at Puy-l'Évêque if you care for a dip after your llama ride or after an amble along the town's lanes down to the Lot river. If you're seeking a snapshotting spot, take your camera first to the Jardins Suspendus garden on the side of the hill, for views over Puy-l'Évêque and the river, then cross the bridge and go down the steps for a stonking view of town. Day tripping time should be carved out too: recommended are Cahors 35 minutes' drive away; Gourdon, within 50 minutes; Gramat, within an hour and five minutes, and Rocamadour within an hour and 20.
