  • A 25-minute drive to Gouffre de Padirac; 35 minutes to Rocamadour
  • Outdoor swimming pool and bar/restaurant on site; dogs welcome
Down in the Lot there are a lot of things to see and do (and eat…) – and you’ll be in an excellent position to experience it all when you stay at Le Petit Bois. This friendly site is just on the edge of the little village of Leyme, putting it within easy reach of top spots like Rocamadour, Gouffre de Padirac and Gramat, along with plenty of hiking trails and other outdoor activities. (And on top of all that, you should be able to find some great places to sample all the local food, including duck, truffles and a fine collection of cheeses). In between all the outings and meals, the pitches at Le Petit Bois make a lovely place to relax – they’re spacious, grassy and set among the trees so you’ll have a bit of shade when you need it. Downtime can be spent at the outdoor swimming pool, sipping drinks at the bar or settling in for something to eat at the restaurant. Many of the practicalities of life are sorted here too, with a launderette, washing-up area and toilet/shower block on site. A five-minute walk takes you to the village centre for a couple of shops and a bank. If your travelling party includes a dog, feel free to bring them along – well-behaved pets are welcome at Le Petit Bois.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly host. Good pitches. The amenities were closed but the host allowed us to use the bathroom in one of the small holiday chalets. We were in a small campervan so rely on use of camp site facilities.

Disliked: Not really set up as a winter campsite

Local attractions

The natural landscape in this area is pretty spectacular – a couple of prime examples to explore are the amazing underground caverns and lakes of Gouffre de Padirac (25 minutes’ drive) and the Jurassic caves at Lacave (40 minutes), accessed via a tour on a little electric train. Hikes to La Cascade d'Autoire (15 minutes) are popular too, as are canoe outings to see the riverside views along the Lot (half an hour). The way people have inhabited these areas are rather intriguing too, as you’ll see on visits to clifftop villages like the gorgeous medieval Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (an hour) and Rocamadour (35 minutes), built across three terraces and linked by the 216 steps of the Great Staircase. While you’re in the Rocamadour area it’s worth stopping in to meet the cheeky residents of Monkey Forest and the impressive birds of prey at Rocher des Aigles (both half an hour). For more animal encounters, try Animal Park of Gramat (25 minutes), which has bears, alpacas and lynx among its residents.
