It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site in Aveyron woodlands beside the Lot river
- River cruises, châteaux and farmers' markets within 15 minutes' drive
- Heated pools with slide, boat and bike hire; snack bar and daily bread
Fond of rivers? Penchant for pedalos? Paddle your way over to Le Port de Lacombe, a family-friendly site right next to a leisure base on the banks of the Lot river. It’s a five-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the town of Flagnac, in France’s Aveyron region: think rivers winding through wooded valleys, medieval towns and villages with castles to explore and busy markets from which to fill your boots with tasty picnic treats…
You can see it all from a base at Le Port de Lacombe, as well as settle down on site in fine surrounds, doing as little or as much as you like. Facilities include a pair of heated outdoor pools (one with a slide, one safe and shallow for smaller patrons) for splashing about and cooling off, as well as direct access to the riverside leisure facilities, which include canoe, kayak and pedalo hire. You can also fish from the banks of the Lot or hire bikes from the site to explore further afield.
In the summer months, a snack bar operates on site, serving up paellas and pizzas as well as smaller bites, and guests can pick up fresh bread and pastries each morning at the site office; just order in advance. Off site, it’s a pleasant 15-minute stroll into Flagnac for a supermarket, shops, bars and eateries.

Local attractions
Up for a market? They’re a great way to try out the local specialities and also to liven up your picnics as you hike, bike and drive your way round this fab region. The nearest is in Decazeville, 15 minutes' drive away, and there’s a bigger one in Figeac (half an hour): check with the site team about days and times.
It’s also worth a visit to the tourist office in Flagnac, not least for information on boat trips and cruises down the Lot. There’s a host of water-based touring options departing from these parts, some taking you underneath the massive Millau viaduct, others dishing up gourmet specialities as you cruise the gorges.
If you’re into history, hoof it over to the next village of Saint-Parthem (10 minutes) for a poke round the Château de Gironde, clinging to the rocky sides of the valley over the river; the village is also home to the Terra OLT Museum, a unique collection exploring and explaining how the river has shaped the natural and human history of the area. If you want to go back further in time, take a wander through the caves at Foissac (40 minutes), to see tiny footprints from 5,000 years ago, burial sites and bizarre rock formations deep underground.
