When it comes to adults-only wellness breaks deep in rural Limousin, Cabane-Spa Cocon du Gast should certainly be on your list of potential places to stay. Five minutes’ drive from the sleepy hamlet of Lourdoueix-Saint-Pierre, this lushly planted meadow and woodland site has accommodation for loved-up couples in a single smartly kitted-out wooden lodge.
The luxury accommodation has a modern vibe and is kitted out with storage, a kitchen with all mod cons and a compact dining area. There’s a woodburner to keep you warm on chillier evenings, and just outside is a separate shower room with a wash basin and composting loo. You also have exclusive-use access to a hot tub and a garden with a barbecue.
As well as jumping in the bubbling hot tub, possible on-site wellbeing activities include massages, pilates, yoga and Nordic walking – all designed to get your mind and body working as one. You can also rent bikes and set off exploring the Limousin countryside, or wait for a clear night to make good use of the telescope while watching stars dance through the skies.
Those who fancy something a little more adventurous can sign up for additional detours arranged by the site, such as a two- or three-hour walking road trip or a full-day road trip by car (both with an adventurous guide). Tailored tours to places like Creuse or Sud Berry are also available.
Should you ever need to leave this gorgeous little spot for supplies, there’s a small supermarket and a couple of low-key bars in Lourdoueix-Saint-Pierre. There are SNCF train stations in La Souterraine and Saint-Sébastien (both within half an hour's drive of the site), where the site can pick you up at the beginning of your stay for an additional fee.

Liked Beautiful, peaceful setting and a lovely cabin. The hosts were really friendly and helpful, with some lovely touches including homemade cake on arrival and even doing the washing up! We really enjoyed the jacuzzi too.
Disliked The only real negative was that jacuzzi use is limited to one 20-minute cycle per day, which wasn’t clear when booking. Additional cycles are charged separately — we paid €25 for an extra 40 minutes. As the jacuzzi is a major feature of the accommodation, we feel this should be made clear in the listing.

Local attractions
In addition to all the wellness activities on site, this peaceful corner of Limousin has great potential for mountain biking along forest trails straight from your cosy hideaway, or hiking along the Petite Creuse river (five minutes’ drive). The more adventurous among you can go climbing steep cliffs at Falaise du Pont des Piles (25 minutes); a more sedate pastime might be a round of golf (half an hour).
There are also swimming beaches and gentle walks in the Brenne Regional Natural Park (40 minutes), and for something a little bit exotic, you can pet and feed semi-feral wolves at The Wolves of Chabrières (50 minutes).
Arty types head for the Creuse Valley (25 minutes), where Impressionist painters captured the scenic landscapes on canvas. Some of their work can be seen in the Musée des Peintres de la Vallée de la Creuse in Crozant (also 25 minutes), where you can visit the hilltop ruins of a medieval fortress too.
