  • Peaceful tree-filled park with shaded pitches near the Loue river
  • Five kilometres from the huge Chaux Forest
  • Two big outdoor pools with helter-skelter slides
Camping Le Val d'Amour is a leafy and lush family park near the banks of the Loue river, between Burgundy and Switzerland in the peaceful Val d'Amour region of the Jura department. It's a holidaymakers' haven, with easy access to local walking, cycling and horse riding trails through the humungous Chaux Forest, and is 20 kilometres from Dole and 15 kilometres from Arbois. Set across almost four hectares, the site's facilities include a pétanque pitch and two pools (one for adults and one for kids, lifeguarded between 2pm and 7pm), and staff organise sporting competitions for guests throughout the summer season. The closest tributary of the Loue river is 500 metres from the site; reach the Loue itself in a pleasant 20-minute stroll for fishing and paddling. There's oodles to keep kids entertained too, with organised activities and entertainment as well as the separate kids' pool with big waterslides, plus swimming lessons during peak season if they need it. The site also has a big playground with a trampoline, as well as green space for football, basketball and volleyball games. Grownups are also well catered for – while the kids are keeping themselves busy, you can book in for a relaxing massage before hitting the tiles at one of the site's regular dance evenings, or take a slightly more peaceful nighttime dip in the pool. Handily, there are several shops in the village, including a nearby bakery and a wine shop, plus a bar and grocery shop, a supermarket, a fromagerie, a pharmacy and a post office.

Liked Nothing

Disliked There was flies everywhere hundreds of them and you couldn’t get away from them, really hard to cook and prepared dinner or even sit and have a cuppa. Although not camps fault we defo was out of there first thing.

The toilet blocks whilst they had all you need and loo roll on the main loo and not in cubicles, the cleaning of this wood hut was terrible not the daily clean but the open season clean of cob webs, birds nests and generally dusting the windows as clearly not be done in a very long while, I know you can’t stop it but try and clean some of it up.

From the manager: Hello
Thank you for your feedback.
Flies are nature's way, it's very hot at the moment, there are farms with cows and it's spraying season.
The toilets are cleaned every day, and you should have seen the document signed by the staff each time they came. There's a bird's nest in the washroom with some youngsters in it. Is that what's dirty? But that's nature. The nest will be removed as soon as the birds have fledged.
It's very dry and we're during the mowing and hedge-trimming season, which means dust and pollen.
If that's all you remember about the campsite, you're a sad bunch.
Is that what being a middle-aged couple is all about? Good luck in your remaining years.
Sincerely

Electric grass pitch

Liked We arrived late to find we had a pitch by toilet block and washing facilities. I was a bit gutted but actually it wasn’t an issue at all, we were separated by a tall hedge and a path and the noise stops fairly early around 10pm. Very quiet in evening, great for a restful night.

Our pitch was shaded with plenty of space for our very large tent and car. The pool and slides were fab, loads of sunbeds and for three days we didn’t really leave campsite except to buy provisions from supermarket which was really near by. It’s a fairly small campsite but they have a snack bar, play park for little ones, boules pitches, grassy area for kids to play football, trampoline. It was a handy stop off for our journey back to Calais. Can’t comment on the location but I think there is a river nearby and the campsite offered kayak trips.

Disliked Pizza van stops serving fairly early and we missed out, I think a whole table of people who were just before us missed out too. Not sure of the reason why they stopped the pizza service when there were clearly loads more customers for it. But we had burgers instead.

Toilets felt like they could have been cleaned a bit more thoroughly but were ok. There was paper but no soap.

Local attractions

France's second-largest forest, Chaux, covers more than 20,000 hectares, and there are loads of woodland walking, horse riding and cycling trails to traverse elsewhere; you can reach the foothills of the Jura in 15 kilometres. Canoeing and kayaking are available at Quingey, about 30 kilometres from the site's local town of Ounans, and the spa town of Salins-les-Bains is less than 20 kilometres away. Salins is best known for its UNESCO-listed salt mines, open to the public for guided tours of its underground chambers. There's also the Salt Museum there to tell you all about the town's salty story, so plenty here to fill a day. For vino quaffing and vineyard tours, visit the little town of Arbois, 15 kilometres from base. The town's also home to the Jura Vineyard and Wine Museum, set on the ground floor of Château Pécauld and made up of an outdoor vineyard-style area and an indoor exhibition space. Other sights to behold include Besançon and its 16th-century Granvelle Palace; the Cathedral of Besançon; the Museum of Time and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Besançon Citadel.
