Pitches

  • Quiet and shaded site on the Doubs river five minutes from Chaussin
  • Canoe/kayak hire and lessons available
  • Garden, playground, table tennis and bar
You can, of course, canoe around here. Camping Le Canoë is by the Doubs river, for days of drifting by canoe or kayak along this watery length on the French-Swiss border: if you're new to the art or don't know where best to start, the site team can sort you out with lessons and vessel rentals from its sister site. You can fish from here too, or hire a bike to investigate the local countryside – armed with a packed lunch made for you by the Camping Le Canoë team on request. Elsewhere, it's a few minutes' drive to the town of Chaussin from your Jura department and Franche-Comté base, and about 50 minutes' drive to Dijon. Hiking's a popular pick around these parts too, along with horse riding, biking and wildlife watching in France's second biggest woodland: the Chaux forest, 40 minutes' drive away. For more watery times, the spa town of Salins-les-Bains is within 45 minutes. Camping Le Canoë is a green and spacious site, with a garden to laze around in after a session on the river. There's also a playground and table tennis to keep the kids occupied, while their keepers can sink a post-canoe drink at the on-site bar.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Small quiet campsite. Stayed here a few times now when driving from the UK.
River is great for a cool down.
Each pitch has electricity.
Shower and toilets basic but always clean.
WiFi if needed at the main entrance.

Disliked Lots of mosquitoes if you happen to be near some of the trees/bushes.
The pine tree pitches are better.

Great quiet site for overnight, went in June and not much open.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Large pitch for motorhome and shaded with trees, well needed at the time. Showers were good and really enjoyed while having an heatwave.

Disliked Not very clean facilities, old
Facility block needs updating. Lots of fly bites under the trees.

Perfect stopping campsite for only 15 euros a night.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Fourth stay here now. Convenient quick stop off when coming 400 miles down from Calais.
Small basic campsite for what I need.
Each pitch has electricity but make sure you have a 20-25m lead as you might. It be near the power box.

Disliked Toilets and showers always clean but outdated now.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Large secluded pitches, surrounded by nature. The Doubs river is just a short walk across the bridge and the perfect peaceful spot for swimming and relaxing. 5 minute drive to the local supermarket and petrol station.
Felt like wildcamping with adequate amenities. Good value for money.

Disliked We arrived at 8:10pm and received a bit of a frosty welcome from the owner who told us reception was closed and asked what did we want. After a couple of minutes, and realising that we'd emailed beforehand, he soon thawed and was friendly enough for the rest of our stay.
Shower and toilet facilities were ok but could do with being updated.

Disliked The owner seems to be not friendly for foreigners (this is my personal feeling).
My power bank was stolen from the toilet while charging.

Local attractions

When you're (mostly) done with canoeing, horse riding, fishing and riverside hiking, make for town and village days around the region such as those in Dole, 30 minutes' drive away, or Burgundy capital Dijon (around 50 minutes). If you're still eager for active adventures, it's about 55 minutes from the site to Champagnole, a gateway town for treks and trips around the Jura lakes and mountains. More fishing and canoeing can be had at Jura's biggest natural lake Lac de Chalain, a short drive from Champagnole, or you can take the circular hike up to the Fontenu viewpoint for a look at the region's famed four lakes (see if you can see the remains of the 3,000-year-old stilt houses just below the lake's surface). Also have a look at Arbois (35 minutes), for the Château Pécauld and pretty views of the Cuisance river passing through town, and at Beaune (45 minutes), the famed commune in the middle of the Burgundy winemaking region.
