Well, Camping de la Foret is certainly very aptly named. Sitting five minutes’ drive from Arrigny in the rural Marne region, this laidback family hideaway is well sheltered from the summer sun as it’s tucked under a canopy of mature trees. The site is also slap bang on the side of Lac du Der, one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe. About 100 metres through the trees from the accommodation is a sandy beach, where you can swim, fish or practise watersports and let younger kids loose on the playground. If you’re not a fan of swimming in open water, there’s also an outdoor pool on site, open from mid June to August 31. The informal snack bar also opens in high season, but you’re only a short journey by car from cafés and pizzerias in Arrigny if you’re staying outside peak holiday time. Lots of landscaping and hedges round and about the site keeps pitches nice and private, and there’s a designated washing-up area as well as a launderette and drying room for keeping on top of the chores.

Great forest spot, near the lake. Staff are lekker, pool and bar are top. Shady spots are a win. Some pitches are a bit tight/uneven, ground can be hard. Facilities mostly clean but a bit old-school. Wi-Fi can be iffy, restaurant service not always on the ball.

Liked Staff were great, very helpful and friendly! Had a slight issue with the hookup as ours wasn't compatible but we were offered a choice of 3 other that had the right one 👍🏻

Disliked Not really anyone's fault but a few wasps pestering us....that's all I can think of 🤣

Liked A lovely rustic site and so close to the lake. The pool was great and the staff welcoming as we checked in. The facilities were as you’d expect. Not brand new but clean.

Disliked Unfortunately, the staff in the restaurant, one lady in particular, became rather frustrated and rude towards us as my autistic son was taking his time to choose an ice cream. My husband was wearing EarPods where he could understand what she was saying and it wasn’t pleasant. I’d suggest if you don’t like English people then don’t work somewhere you’re going to meet lots of them. It was shame as then we didn’t feel welcome and chose not to use it again.

Liked Location was good, short walk or bike ride to the lake. Great for kids to ride around the lake with dedicated bike paths. Super high ropes play area for the kids which was very reasonably priced and had a cafe underneath. Campsite itself had good sized pitch.

Disliked Toilets / showers were a good size but floors of toilets often flooded.

Staff were particularly unhelpful at every encounter (not very tolerant of our English accented French).

Liked Clean facilities , pool was great , restaurant fantastic ! Lac du der is literally 5 mins walk away was stunning and had great fun on the high ropes in the trees .

Disliked Wir bekamen einen schmalen Platz zwischen zwei Strassen. Es gab keine Beschattung und keine Abgrenzung, wie angepriesen. Es war laut und hektisch, da immer Betrieb.
Wir woltten auf einen freien Platz,mehr abseits wechseln, wie bei der Buchung gewünscht. Das Personal, ging nicht darauf ein und war eher genervt mit unserem Anliegen.
Wir blieben nur eine Nacht, gebucht hatten wir 3 Nächte. Beim Auschecken, meinte ein Angestellter, wir bekämen aber kein Geld zurück, weil wir füher gingen.

Liked Good welcome to the site, food was good and great pool. Facilities are of good standard and well worth an overnight stay. Lake available but is very overcrowded.

Disliked Not really a dislike but some pitches are uneven and would need level blocks.

You can circumnavigate Lac du Der by bike, rollerblade or on foot along the 38-km multi-use path, adding on an optional extension for cyclists to Vitry-le-François, with its fine Italianate town centre, or Saint-Dizier (both just over an hour by bike), for a meander around the impressive 17th-century ramparts. If you’re chasing still more activity, there’s a treetop adventure course at the sports centre in lakeside Giffaumont-Champaubert (10 minutes’ drive), where you can also learn to sail dinghies, kayak out onto the lake or play hotly contested games of pétanque. When the energy levels of your offspring are waning, they’ll appreciate the chance to cuddle goats, llamas and cute Valais Blacknose sheep at the Ferme Pédagogique du Grand Der (10 minutes). And should you feel like following more grown-up pursuits, Vitry-le-François is the gateway to tastings in the champagne vineyards of the Côteaux Vitryats.
