General

  • Peaceful site on a riverbank in the Suisse-Normande region
  • Near good fishing spots and 140 kilometres of hiking trails
  • Playground, pétanque court and food shop

Peace, quiet and the riverbanks of the Orne and Rouvre are the main draws of this site in the Suisse-Normande region… and the fact that it’s close to the Roche d'Oëtre rock formation, the fromageries of Camembert, and 140 kilometres of countryside hiking trails.

Hikers will have their pick of the plethora of routes of varying lengths all over this land, with some starting right from or very near to the site, and more demanding routes around the Roche d'Oëtre area two minutes’ walk away. Other activities available nearby include canoeing, mountain biking and – yes, true – cow riding.

Camping de la Rouvre has direct access to the Rouvre for fishing, with trout and pike among the species you might land, and the banks of the Orne are 500 metres from base for more angling. Back on site, a peaceful vibe reigns with no disco or entertainment to interrupt the riverside vibe, just a playground to keep the kids topped up with fun and a pétanque court for gentle games.

Essential food items can be procured at the on-site food shop, and other bits can be picked up at various farmers’ markets throughout the week, such as in Condé on Thursday mornings, in Cliff on Saturday mornings and in Clécy on Sunday mornings (in season), all a short drive away.

Very friendly welcome when we arrived after a long journey. We decided to use it as a last stop off before we caught the ferry home. We can recommend.

A large and secluded pitch which gave lots of privacy. Busy site, but well run with children and folk just lapping up the natural ambience and vibe. Bike riding is BIG here! The wider area was new to us: 'Suisse Normande' - incredibly beautiful and hill-laden with sweeping roads and views! Like our native Worcestershire...even better in places!!!

Shower block etc pretty basic but very serviceable. They have a great 'bunk house' area alongside the 'accueil' with a covered outdoor bar area which we saw people relaxing in. We ordered 'pain' to takeaway and a croissant and coffee for breakfast which was served in a cute way at 9am the next morning, after which we set off for Quistreham - about an hour's easy drive.

It was an absolutely gorgeous area and although we had no time to explore the immediate environs (we heard the lovely river - very calming to sleep to!) we enjoyed a quiet stroll around the nearby town of Pont D'Oilly and were stunned by its incredible pivotal role in the weeks after DDay in 1944. We ate pizza at the top of the hill and reflected on the bravery and sacrifice of all those who have gone before and sacrificed everything so we can enjoy holidays and a life such as this...

    Disliked:

The pitch was large but very worn. It's in a steep - 'Shire'-like - valley which felt quite damp in the morning and the lack of grass meant our tent and stuff got pretty muddy even though there was no rain. We didn't check the wifi there - it seemed the last thing on people's minds!

We wouldn't return ourselves, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't recommend the place to young families on a budget who want a really lovely natural 'home-cooked' summer break together.

It's busy....quiet but busy and for us we'd feel cramped if we had stayed for longer. But fab for families who just want a base to chill out in nature.

The breakfast was pricey for what it was even thought it was served with smiles - £6.50 each for a small coffee and a croissant and half a local baguette. For some reason we weren't served the 'jus' which I saw the other couple having and I was too bleary eyed to ask!

It is a lovely site, clean and the hosts were helpful and pleasant. Good access to walks and cycling from the site. Good central location, nice to be by the river.

    Disliked:

The plots are quite small, access to the site is a little tricky, there is no toilet paper in the toilets which I find unusual, would be good if you could order bread etc in the morning.

Great set up, the hosts are warm and welcoming and speak perfect English. Really a quality site for an authentic camping experience. The location of the campsite is ideal for discovering the incredible landscapes of Swiss Normandy, with hiking trails connected to the campsite, famous sites and kayaking all within a 10 minute drive. The feel of the campsite is very natural and is nestled in a sort of valley by a small river. Excellent maintenance and cleanliness, it was a welcome break from the tacky and often overcrowded campgrounds that we have at times experienced. Anyways, if you're considering camping in the area, don't hesitate, this place will not disappoint.

Local attractions

A full 140 kilometres of hiking trails network the local area, with plenty starting from the site to take you to La Roche d'Oëtre or out to the wider Normandy landscapes for scenic vistas and serene countryside strolls.

Those who thrive on thrills should check out the Orne Aventure la Roche d'Oëtre treetop adventure park to hang around its giant ziplines, monkey bridges and tarzan jumps, or try horse, pony or cow riding excursions (yep), all two kilometres from base.

For further outdoor adventurings, go for canoeing/ kayaking, paddleboarding, mountain biking and climbing trips from Pont d'Ouilly’s recreation centre. Slightly slower paced excursions include trips on the Pont Erembourg Vélorail or the Clécy Miniature Railway, both within 20 kilometres, or (the clear winner, obvs) cheese tasting at the heaps of whiffy-cheese producers that wield their wheels over in Camembert.
