- Family-run site in the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park
- Colourful and scenic grounds five minutes' drive from Lac de Chambon
- Heated pool, paddling pool, sports activities and snack bar
Wherever you wend your way in France, you should make room for some time in the Auvergne region and the Puy-de-Dôme department.
Settling down at Camping L'Europe is a sensible holiday decision too, for this will have your intrepid self slap bang in the centre of France and deep in the spectacular Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park, the biggest in the land. Volcanoes (natch) are here by the heap, along with lakes, caves, castles… and the option of heady adventures in a hot air balloon soaring over this stunning landscape.
And in between all that? Settle yourself down on site for restful or energetic days among its excellent facilities and activities, for enough activities to keep you busy from dawn to dusk… and beyond. Dances, bingo, theme dinners, concerts, circus and magic shows all laid on in the evening; by day, mosey along to the heated outdoor pool with waterslide while the kids are at the summer club for ages six to 12 (with English-speaking staff for visitors from across the Channel).
Teens and adults can also get stuck in the likes of water aerobics, football, tennis, basketball, table tennis, pétanque tournaments and baseball, all fuelled up by food and drink bits from the snack bar, takeaway and shop.
And if your holiday preference is to do not very much at all: the site covers five and a half hectares of peaceful and pretty grounds (see pics), so you can find your own restful spot: pick up (even more) supplies at Murol, half a kilometre away, for a picnic.

Local attractions
Lac de Chambon, five minutes' drive away, is a fine spot for outdoor dips, as well as getting out onto the water via waterskiing, pedalboating, canoeing and kayaking. More restfully, several beaches are on the lake's shore – these are the biggest stretches of sand in the Centre region if you're still seeking a quiet spot.
Also within easy reach are guided tours with medieval shows at Château de Murol (five minutes' drive), the Cornadore caves (also five minutes), and outdoor adventures mountain biking, hiking or quad biking; the Murol tourist office on Rue de Jassaguet can point you in the right direction.
But this is of course volcano land. There's plenty to pick from for days of crater exploring: get up to the summit of Puy de Dôme (20 minutes) by cog railway or Puy de Sancy (35 minutes) by cable car, or spend a day – or two – learning about the lot at the splendid Vulcania volcanic park 40 minutes away. Volcano Lemptégy, where you can get right to the volcano core by foot or via a mini train, is within 45 minutes.
